If I'm strong enough to defeat their greatest enemy, why would they think they can kill me so easily? After it becomes clear that you can't be assimilated into the village, they don't even attempt a peaceful solution.

This reminds me of a story of a woman who called the police because someone stole contraband from her. By calling the cops she assumes they are competent enough to handle her opponent, but she also thought they couldn't unravel her own machinations.
