Hi everyone,

I am having really bad slowdown problems with BG:EE, making it pretty much unplayable. I had no issues whatsoever in the beginning of the game; the slowdown problems only got bad when I faced Centeol in Cloakwood, then they went away after the battle, and now I am in the secret Cloakwood mine and the problem is worse than ever. I can't tolerate this. Can anyone help me figure this out? I am on Windows 7 64-bit.

Here is what I have tried so far:

Turning on/off the Alternate Renderer graphics setting
Scanning for updates and updating my Intel graphics drivers

Neither of these worked. I have also tried to find the Baldur.ini file (I heard from some sources that you need to edit that), but cannot find it for the life of me... even after checking the 'help me find Baldur.ini' thread on GOG.

Please help!!

Beamdog, in their singularly peculiar 'wisdom', have replaced baldur.ini with baldur.lua, which you can find in ..\Documents\Baldur's Gate - Enhanced Edition\ . It is a text file, so open it with notepad.

Thanks. So then is it right to assume that directions of what to edit in Baldur.ini to solve this problem also apply in the same manner to Baldur.lua? Sorry if this is a dumb question!

No. Beamdog's baldur.lua is in a completely different format. What instructions are you following?
it just says to insert this into Baldur.ini:

INSERT INTO options ROWS (
'Graphics', 'OpenGL Version', '1',
'Window', 'Full Screen', '0',

Ok, find 'opengl' with 'CTRL+F' and you should see something like:

SetPrivateProfileString('Graphics','version','OpenGL version XXXXXX

Replace XXXXXX with 1, so it looks like:

SetPrivateProfileString('Graphics','version','OpenGL version 1')

Next find 'full screen' and make sure it reads:

SetPrivateProfileString('Window','Full Screen','0')

Thanks for your help. Unfortunately, this did not solve the problem. I tried once, still the same problem, then restarted my computer and tried again. No luck.

On top of that, the screen is not full anymore (I know that is intentional), but now I can't scroll the screen by moving my mouse to the edge. Of course that doesn't really matter because the game is still unplayable.

I appreciate your help, but do you know any other ways in which I could fix this problem?

I saw this elsewhere as an edit for the Baldur.ini file that may also help:

'Game Options', 'Always Dither', '0',
'Game Options', 'Weather', '0',
'Game Options', 'Area Effects Density', '10' ,
'Program Options', 'Translucent Shadows', '0',
'Program Options', 'Sprite Mirror', '1',

Thoughts?

Those are options that can be changed in-game via options, graphics. Though they may have different names. I know that 'Always Dither' is the same. Try tweaking the game options, especially try the 'Alternate Renderer'.

Thanks again for your help. Unfortunately I've tried messing with the settings and everything is still terrible. I suspect my Intel graphics driver is the main problem. I may just give up unless anyone has more recommendations. What a bummer - I had already put a lot of time into this game with things working fine until now! :(

Yeah, Intel graphics are not in the least bit gamer friendly, unfortunately.
