I know this is probably a matter of personal preference, but when to people go to the TotSC portions of the game? Before entering Baldur's Gate, at some time during the Baldur's Gate sequence, or after completing the main storyline?. Just interested in your opinions.

Playing the BG1 - GOG version, vanilla (no mods).

Thank you!

My personal preference is immediately before returning to Duke Eltan, to inform him of the Iron Throne's plans in Candlekeep. The reasoning being (other than the team is strong enough to survive Durlag's Tower by this point) that you have likely completed everything in Baldur's Gate proper, and once you return to the Duke, you are transported back to Candlekeep. After completing that episode there is nothing more to do, other than confront Sarevok. Never forget that TotSC content is not designed for early chapters, and your party WILL die if, for example, you try to complete it in chapter 3.
Personally, I do all the TotSC content right before entering Baldur's Gate. Your party should be strong enough if you did all the subquests in the entire game up to that point. I do Durlag's Tower last, and then I enter Baldur's Gate.

I've always thought it a bit of a strange addition.

"Hey, let's go wandering around in a different part of the world, and undertake some completely unrelated quests while we're saving the Sword Coast. Cool!"

Weird.

Is there a way to be sent TO Ulgoth's Beard from the main game, just as in Icewind Dale you can be sent to a different part of the world by Hjollger (or something) if you have the Heart of Winter Expansion installed?

I use a mod which allows you to keep playing after defeating Sarevok, and usually don't play through Tales until then. To me, that seems to make the most sense in terms of story-consistency. The threat to the Sword Coast has passed, and our intrepid adventurers are looking for some new challenges, starting with some rumors of trouble in Ulgoth's Beard.

What mod do you use? I belive it would make the most sense too if it was in that order, but I ended up doing always before confronting Sarevock.

The original one I have seems to be lost to the mists of time, but this appears to do the same thing:

Note that it says it's for the Enhanced Edition, but the data files between EE and original are the same.

I usually do the TotSC quests right after Chapter 6 when it makes sense staying away from the city for a while and there's still no felt urgency for following the main quest.

It's also nice to have gotten the stuff and XP from chapter 6 before, some TotSC quests can be quite mean without opportunity to leave before winning some fights.
