I just thought of an idea for a bizarre sort of mod (for either game): one that removes CHARNAME (the character you create at the start of the game) entirely from the game.

As for how it would work, I'm thinking something like this:

BG1: You start with Imoen, who has just fled Candlekeep alone (or maybe even still inside Candlekeep). You have the opportunity to pick up Xzar and Metatron, as usual, and can continue as normal. The assassins that are out to get CHARNAME will either not be there, or will be present with their scrolls changed. The Bhaalspawn dreams would simply not occur.

BG2: You start with Imoen again, in Irenicus's Dungeon. You can then pick up Minsc and Jaheira as normal. There are two edge cases that would need to be carefully handled:
*: If you leave Irenicus's Dungeon with Imoen alone, you would end up with nobody. Perhaps one could solve this by giving you control of Aerie, whose illusion would have just been dispelled, or perhaps she escaped her shackles and needs to remove the illusion on her own.
*: If you reach Spellhold with Yoshimo alone, the best solution would be to switch over to Imoen, who is about to escape Spellhold on her own.
Of course, the trials at the end of the game would have to be altered or removed.

Has anything like this been tried?

Right, and let's get rid of all the dialog in the game while we're at it... You're nuts.

Actually, I wouldn't mind a mod that gets rid of all the dialog and cutscenes, to be honest.

One of the reasons I have not managed to finish Baldur's Gate 2 is all the banter that interrupts whatever you're doing, combined with all sorts of timed quests involving companions triggering as a result of such banter.

I have absolutely no idea why you play this game at all. Seriously.

I don't play this game. I'd much rather play something like Wizardry, Bard's Tale, or even, say, Elminage Gothic.
There is a game like this. Its called Icewind Dale.

Well that explains a lot.

I would play the shit out of this mod. Sarevok would never know what hit him.

Playing BG without the main character when the story revolves around the main character is kinda dumb.

The idea would be to "fix" the story so that it *doesn't* revolve around the main character.

Why? The story is about the player character being Bhaalspawn. The premise doesn't need 'fixing'. Good grief, considering you don't even play the game you make a lot of noise about it.

Metatron is indeed terrifying.

What would the story be about in such case?

It would make no sense.
You would basically need to create new within the same engine to make it at least a bit sensible.

I don't think there's a mod for this. It would be like playing Skyrim without the Dragon Born. I don't think we'll see a mod like this because you would have to rewrite the entire game. And there's *a lot* of text in this game.

Doesn't Skyrim actually have such a mod?

Seconded. The game you're looking for is Icewind Dale (and for that matter, Icewind Dale 2). The Icewind Dale games run on the same engine, use the same rules and are based in the same world as the Baldur's Gate series (different geographical location), and you create the entire 6-man party yourself, meaning no banter or anything of the sort.

Give the Dales a try. You might like it!
