This occurs in BG1, BG2, and BG Tutu on Windows 8.1 64-bit OS with updated drivers.

When creating a character, the mouse works fine, but when it comes time to name the main player character, a random string of letters and numbers automatically and randomly fills in. This cannot be overwritten or deleted. If this random name is confirmed and the game starts, the map is selected and the rest command selected rapidly and with no input from me. The games are unplayable this way. Any advice and/or help?

It's a driver issue. Reboot your computer.

That'll do it. I installed the drivers, bu had not restarted the laptop to finalize the installations. Everything works much better now.
