If anyone is looking to beat BG1 on highest difficulty as a solo character then I just finished it with a shaman.
Wild mage is also really good.
Both have really slow killing speed in the beginning though.

Shamans can just use shamanic dance to whitle down the enemies (goes faster when u get major animals later on), aswell as using nymphs for hold person (this is how u beat sarevok).

Wild Mage basically have to rely on saving and reloading the game often to get good results on wild magic.
Pick charm person and find familiar as your first spells, kill all the npcs in Candlekeep for exp (optional but hilarious), you can charm Gorion for some kickass spells to help you along.
When done with Candlekeep charm Gorion once more and talk with him to leave area.
Head to High hedge immediately and purchase atleast invisibility and hold person (if your at 1 rep then pay 1200gold each time at temple to raise it, your a wild mage you got infinite gold with gems!)
Head to Durlags tower, go to the first large underground level and collect cloud kill from a bookcase (where the 3 dopplegangers are) and you have your main source of damage. Save game and cast it just out of sight of enemies, reload if cast fail, very rarely will the enemies walk towards you (you can counter this by instantly casting invisibility).
When you finally reach Baldurs gate pick up every monster summoning and paralyzation wand you can afford/carry.

I think Shaman and Wild Mage are the only classes able to solo Legacy without excessive kiteing or having like 1000 ingame days spent due to resting (wild mages dont need rest, just excessive reloading =) )
Wild Mage isn't very different from any other mage in BG1, contrary to the popular opinion.
