Hello everyone, I come to you in dire need of help because I have run out of ideas.

I have Windows 7 (64 bit) and as it is said, Baldurs Gate 1 and 2 should be compatible with it, but not for me as I get constant but completely random crashes in the game. It just stops at some point, I land at the desktop and then I can close the game via Task Manager.

I've tried everything I could find, I googled for help, I deleted the temp and cache folders, I tried different compatibility-modes in Windows, I reinstalled, I changed graphic-configurations and cache-configurations, I even tried different versions in different languages - nothing works. I don't find any solution to this problem at all.
This happened in Icewind Dale 1 on this computer too, so it MIGHT be that my PC actually got a problem with Infinity Engine games overall but, well... what does it change?

Bottom line is I can't play these great games but I have read of people who play them just fine on Windows 7. Still... I am at my wit's end.

What should I do?

Im not sure what the solution is definitively but I ran into random ctd running the games too; typically when I would "zone" in to a house or something. But after I installed a number of mods and ran BG as BGT I didnt have a crash after that.
Same issue here. Windows 7 x64, fresh install of GOG Baldur's Gate, Widescreen mod and GUI mod. Using saves from an old BG install.

I actually bought the GOG version in part because my disc version was crashing in the same way.

Edit: Actually, like thorleifclover, I only get the issue upon zoning.

Edit 2: Switched to BGT, works a charm.

Same issue here. Windows 7 x64, all as above.

Additionally, my bg crashed when I moved stuff in the inventory.
I was able to get rid of this crashes by enabling (funny) 3d acceleration in baldur.ini

Maybe this helps anyone.

I have a similar problem. I can't get far because the game crashes everytime I try to equip Minsc with the 2 handed sword you find in the first area.

I had the same problem with both BG1 and BG2, it would randomly crash every so often, frequently in the inventory screen but it could happen anytime. (Vista 64-bit).

The problem was my anti-virus program (I use Kaspersky AV but found posts of others with the same problem using other anti-virus programs). The solution for me was to exclude the game folder from the anti-virus scanning.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the tip. I installed the fix pack as well as the widescreen mod before I saw this reply. And that seemed to solve the problem. From the links I guess it was the widescreen mod.

Happily playing through BG2 once again.

This makes sense, anti-virus programs used to wreck havok.

They have gotten better though. In any case, I have "Game Mode on, which prevents Kapersky from starting to scan when you are playing a game (it basically detects fullscreen mode, I'd have to read up on it a bit more)....

So BG1 is crashing about every 10 minutes. I have a clean install and just installed the widescreen mod, with a 16x10 monitor resolution. I could not stand the tiny things, so I installed the TWM_GUI_beta0,994 executable. I wish I could remember what that stands for....it worked like a charm and really "pretty's up the interface."

if I can get it to stop just dropping instantly back to windows without warning.
