Currently in the mood to finally play through the entirety of the series (never got past the first battle of BG1, and always ran out of steam just before the first Irenicus fight in BG2), and debating what character.

Debating a Fighter/Thief of some form (either Fighter/Assassin or Kensai/Thief), but the Paladin still entertains me (I like them).

How did the Baldurs Gate games implement Paladins? Is it "one evil act and you are boned" or is it tied to the reputation meter?

Thanks. And this will be BG1 via Tutu, if that matters.

All party reputation. I think 6 is the cutoff. Go under that and you're hosed.

EDIT: I think fighter dualled to thief is a pretty tight choice. Fighter/thief multi also good. I don't recommend kensai/thief dual. All based (on game boards) at getting UAI as thief HLA to overcome kensai limitation.

Straight up thief is cool. Check out aVenger's (now Wisp stewardship?) Rogue Rebalacing mod.

Paladinhood is tied to the rep meter. IIRC, if you fall below 6 rep you lose your status as a paladin and become a plain fighter. I think there is a way to regain it, though.

It's the same for ranger btw, you can't fall below 4 or you lose your class abilities.

Falling below 6 considering you start at 12 is easy to avoid, you'd have to be doing it on purpose, since the only thing that could make you lose enough points is killing innocents NPCs.

With Paladin's, you simply have to gain enough back, IIRC. Rangers were never my cup of tea. I'm a sword swinger, pure and simple.

But I hope this helps. And if you mean the fight in Friendly Arms, I know a tip to get past it.

By the way. Fighter/Mage or Fighter/Thief are awesome choices.
Much appreciated. I doubt it will be an issue since I tend to prefer to RP nice people anyway, but it is nice to know I have the ability to be a right asshat if I feel it will enhance the story.

And I've considered Fighter/Mage, but it just seems to serve no real purpose other than giving me a few more hitpoints (the way I play mages, they don't stand on the front lines).

The Fighter/Thief sounds fun, at least for the roleplaying aspect (backstabbing would be fun, but only for opening salvos). But since I plan to use Tutu to do the complete saga, I won't actually BE a thief until some time during SoA. And a short-sword wielding Fighter might not be the most fun for BG1.

Paladin has the advantage of making me combat effective through the entire series, but I am not really sure of a good way to RP a Paladin of one of the AD&D-era deities (gotta do some research) as a son of Bhaal.

Not quite true about the fighter/mage dual class. First, it's giving you a lot more hitpoints, about 50% more. Considering that if your PC dies, it's game over, people like having as many hp as possible.

Second, if you look at a wizard's spellbook for BG, you'll notice they have lots of buffs, especially self-only protective buffs. You can basically make yourself immune to everything for a short while. People combine that with the fighter higher hp and good AC to make almost unkillable characters.

Still, you don't need to play the best possible PC to win the game. You can even play a weak class (like bard) and breeze through the game since after all you'll have 5 other people in your party and most of the NPCs are quite powerful.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I am tempted to actually BE a Bard (I like bards...). For me, it is all about being able to roleplay my character.

And that is why the Fighter/Mage will never work for me. It is just way too munchkin-y
Bards are fun to play in combat & roleplay. They can operate akin to multi-classed mages, have a few rogue skills, and I have fun making my Bard PC be a frontliner in my party.

So are paladins, but you gotta remember that your life isn't truly your own (you're essentially in the army of a Faerunian diety; good-aligned of course). That's not everyone's cup of tea. There's plenty of data online of Faerunian dieties for to help you do your research, if that's the way you wanna go.

Each of thieves, multi-class & dual-class thieves have both lots of roleplay & combat potential, each in their own right. Juss gotta explore which one is perfect to your tastes of how you want to roleplay & experience combat.
