Is there a way to select everyone in the party without having to get them all in the same area on screen and highlighting them all? I tried to select them all through their portraits but it didn't work. Does party formation also play a key role or is it merely for the players playing style?

Thanks!

Yes, there are 3 ways for you to select the entire party. Pressing = is a hotkey to select them all. Also, next to the A.I. button (the lantern) there is another button that selects the entire party. Lastly, you can hold CTRL and click on all of their portraits. This can also be used to select 2 or 3 people to do one task. Party formation is important, but even with the worst possible party in the game you can still beat it with the right tactics. Have fun!
I find formation mostly useful for keeping certain characters out of harms way (in the triangle formation, the last character is in the middle back which is handy for shielding a mage) and for pathfinding. When I'm outside, I stick to the triangle formation so I uncover a bit more of the landscape but when I'm indoors, I pick the 2 lines of 3 so the NPCs don't try and wander into another room to keep formation
