Hello,

Getting back into games, and figure I try and play some older classics that I never played before. Just bought Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition. Was wondering if there's anything else I should get or know? Are there any mods you recommend or something of the sort?
The EE versions are a buggy mess. Install the classics instead for a way better experience. You can find the serial codes for them in the EE menu in your Library on GoG under More.

Hello Okay thanks. So what mods should I get for the original? Thinking of adding these two.

You think that'll be fine, anything else I should get?

Those two will be just fine.

I suggest reading the manual for the game though. If you haven't played games that use the Ad&D rules before. At least for character creation.

Okay just finished all the modding. Excited to play it! Thanks for the suggestion!
BG:EE worked fine when I played it, bugs which were there at release were patched.

Before fiddling around with unofficial modifications I recommend either playing the unmodded original or simply playing the EEs which were made to be played on modern computers.

The classics on gog have been fixed to be played on modern computers too. The EE versions were designed to be played on I-pads and stuff like that. Buggy mess on computers.

Plus if someone is to play a classic rpg for the first time, going for the dumbed down remake might not be the way to go.

Same with movies. Watch the original Total Recall instead of the remake.

The Enhanced Editions work great to me. I would give them a chance before going with the original version and having to find a bunch of mods and stuff. The EE were full of bugs at release, years ago, but they're very stable now.

Personally, I've played the originals for years, and after trying the EE I'm never going back, I find all the little improvements in the EE make for a way better experience than the original version with mods.

There are a lot of haters of Beamdog, some criticism is valid, some was valid years ago but no longer, my advice is give it a try and judge for yourself. :)

Those two are perfect for a first playthrough.
Just saying the EEs worked fine on my Windows 7, 8, and 10 desktop. (I.e., I played them under all 3 of those OSes during various phases of the computer's life.)

And I guess if you like BG 1 you can do the Siege of Dragonspear expansion too? I haven't played that one yet (sale-waiting), but the various "controversies" all seem much ado about nothing to me, and I'm looking forward to it.

For general gameplay recommendations, um, party balance, I guess? You need one or two good meatshields and good offensive and defensive spellcasters. Look up a walkthrough, go through the classes and NPCs, decide what works for you. Oh, and like 75-80% of the game is sidequests, so be sure and explore as much as you can rather than rush from plot quest to plot quest. So, like most RPGs, I guess.

That's because you haven't played it. And if you do and still feel the same, then you don't care about quality at all.

If you like BG and then think SoD is good, you just don't get it.

https://us.v-cdn.net/5019558/uploads/editor/sp/dnce7jw3633a.jpg Stuff like this is all over SoD. You can't even roleplay in this case. You get 5 variations of "I am offended". Thats it. It is the writer trying to tell people that the word "wench" is offensive. Even though in the Forgotten Realms it isn't offensive at all.
Since the games don't use much harddisk space you can install and try out the different variants yourself. I'm quite sure the Enhanced Edition will grant you the best experience.
I'm quite sure that the original with widescreen mode will give you the best experience.

1. In EE Beamdog replaced original cutscenes with their own, amateurish "movies." This includes the intro which is key for setting the right tone for the game.

2. In EE Beamdog shoves down your throat four new companions which are really poorly written and distracting. And there is no way to avoid interacting with them.

3. The last time I played EE, which admittedly was a while ago, there were still many bugs. For example, my two characters got somehow "entangled" and I could not do anything to disentangle them but to reload the game...

I have replayed recently classic edition with ZERO bugs and it works just fine on my Windows 7 laptop. If classic edition with mods works on you machine (which it should with minimal effort) then there is no reason to subject yourself to poor quality of Beamdog additions and "fixes" and spoil what is one of the best RPG games in the history.

Yeah those new companions are dreadful. They intrude on the player constantly. A friend of mine was asking me the other day if there is a way to uninstall them someway. I don't think that is possible? They should have been made optional.
