The more NPCs / Enemies on screen at one time = the slower the game runs, even though I expected no trouble whatsoever.

Windows Vista 64 bit
4 gigs RAM
Core 2 Duo 2.00 GHz
NVidia 9600M GS 512 MB

Full screen 16 bit (plus last option checked) equals no black boxes, but slowdown

Windowed 32 bit (plus last option checked) equals no slowdown, but black boxes

Windowed 16 bit (plus last option checked) equals slowdown, no black boxes

Very frustrating... I was really looking forward to reliving some great memories along the sword coast.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'm having similar difficulties, I wonder if it's a dual core cpu issue?
if you have added any item stacking mods that stack potions or arrows. This can cause sever slowdown sometimes. I know some people in BG2 have performance problems with the endless bag of holding, to much stuff in it and it causes a slowdown.
Not using any mods at all.

BG2 seems to work just fine...

The slowdown is very noticeable even when just a few extra NPCs are on the screen (example. The "chanters" in the inner square of Candlekeep = drastic slowdown)

Thanks for the idea though :)

What is your path finding set to, its been along time since I've played BG and I dont know if these options are just for BG2 but if there for BG1 then in the options there should be some place to set the path finding. It would be in the setup area before you start the game. Also what graphic mode are you running it on. I think you can select open GL or direct draw from the same options as path finding, maybe this is the problem? I'm sure there is someone much more qualified then me to answer this. Hope this sort of puts you in the right direction. Maybe its just GOG's version. If the forums here cant help you then maybe the forums at spell hold studios can help.

Maybe playing around with your hardware acceleration might fix it. Hope you guys both get it fixed, Your computer should def run it with no problems.

Baldur's Gate doesn't have any hardware video acceleration and is all software. Thus, it doesn't run particularly well in certain situations on modern computers, and adding high resolution mods only causes more problems. If you're on Windows XP you can disable DirectDraw acceleration to fix the problem; otherwise you'll need to use Baldur's Gate II and EasyTutu to port Baldur's Gate to the Baldur's Gate II engine, which allows for hardware acceleration and should fix the slowdown.
I've tried playing around with the pathfinding/AI update frequency (default being 30) with no success. Also, there aren't nearly as many options in the BG1 config as there are in BG2s.

I suppose I'll give EasyTuTu a try, it would be nice to use the better engine to run the same game.

Thanks for all the advice!
