Hi, I just recently bought BGII but there's been a somewhat annoying issue that's been bothering me. For some reason in Windows 7, I'm unable to cast a spell from the quickbar because clicking the spell button does not seem to work. Or at least, it doesn't work unless I open up another game menu.

Basically if I ever want to cast a spell, I have to open a game menu, close it, pick my spell and rinse/repeat for each time I want to cast something.

Any help will be much appreciated! Thanks much. :D

hmm ive never had this issue b4, all i can think of is..

1. make sure that the spell ur trying to cast isnt or is a double click spell, obvoisly some spell will require u to click it then the target u wish to use it on.
2. if it isnt a double click spell then make sure your left clicking (another obvious thing), it require u to right click the action bar to set a spell but left to cast.
3. if all else fails, try restarting the game and/or your computer. (you could also trying running the game as an adminstrater)

Check your spell icon on the quick bar. There should be a positive number if the spell is ready to cast. If this number is zero, your spell needs to be either reassigned, or you need to rest to 'remember' the spell -- spells (or their uses) run out as you use them, and will cause this behaviour if that has happened.

thanks for the response, it isn't anything like that, I've played the games before, seems like it may be an issue with windows 7. as the OP mentioned opening a pane and then closing it seems to help, to aid in understanding what I mean here is an example.

player character is a fighter/mage with mage armor memorized and rested. not wearing any armor.
Imoen is in the party.

1. select main character
2. click cast spell icon
3. icon is clickable(i.e. not greyed out) but does not bring up list of memorized spells
4. open inventory
5. close inventory
6. click cast spell icon
7. list of memorized spells opens and the selected spell casts successfully.

the opening and closing is not permanent though, you have to do it for each spell you want to cast.

I'll try a clean install and see if it is something the fix pack or bgt is adding.

for the record I'm using the gog version of both bg1 and 2.

That is odd, but I can tell you now that it is not a Windows 7 issue. I run both BG1 and 2 on Windows 7 64bit, and I have never seen this issue, even with BGT. Whenever you get strange issues like this, inside Windows or games, your very first step should be to reboot, to rule out strange driver issues -- these DO happen.
I remember having similar problem with another game on Infinity (IWD). My third quickbar slot was constantly being pressed. Turned out the only solution was to uninstall my wireless Logitech keyboard drivers.

Have you tried disabling your Antivirus software? These sometimes interfere with games on Infinity Engine (I've had this with IWD2 and BG2, although it was caussing assertion failures).
I have to thank you for your tip hickory, the reboot completely solved it.

I really didn't think it would, I was surprised. a good reminder to start with simple solutions first.

Thanks again!

Good to hear, and you're welcome.
