Because I seem to recall that there was a way back in the day. I swear I played as him once. Or maybe the mod and/or way just makes him a companion? Sheesh I forget.

You could try out the Drizzt Saga:

You may be thinking of Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance for consoles (which is a completely different game). If you completed the game on the Extreme difficulty setting, you unlocked him as a playable character.

In BG 1 & 2, you could simply create an elf character with dark skin and white hair, and name him Drizzt. If you do so in Baldur's Gate II and get a very low reputation, the real Drizzt will actually attack you when you encounter him -- claiming that you've tarnished his name.
Interesting. You can actually play as Drizzt and his companions with that mod? Does that work with EE edition? And can you play as them from start to finish? And Which BG? 1?

Quote:

"The Drizzt Saga is a hack-and-slay quest mod notable for its inclusion of Salvatorian characters as recruitable companions; namely, Drizzt, Cattie-Brie, Wulfgar, Bruenor and Regis."

Original (no EE) BG1 saga only.
Oh. Well darn.
Drizzt Saga for EE

About the closest thing I know of (I am by no means an expert) is to find Drizzt (won't work in the original BG1, but will in BG1EE and beyond), and Ctrl+Q him into your party. I would think you could then make him your leader and pretend you're him. He won't have a portrait, and I'd assume there are other limitations, but you'll hit your BG1 foes like a truck, and nobody in that game will be able to hurt you very much, if at all. :D

AFAIK, if you Ctrl-Q him, the game will crash when Drizzt will level up.

Could very well be the case, but in BG1 he's already at a pretty high level, so there isn't much need to level him up.

This did indeed exist way back in the late 1990s for Baldur's Gate 1. I saw my friend play as Drizzt. Very overpowered, but a fun curiosity. I've searched for that little mod many times over the years ... but I've never found it.
There is also Region of Terror which is for BG2
