jsidhu762: I think most folks would be 0 level characters. Very few people would actually have outstanding stats. And in response to Hickory, everything except charisma and wisdom can be measured in some way.
Strength is how much you can lift,
Hickory: Nonsense. You can be as strong as an ox, able to punch Mike Tyson out and yet not be able to lift a sack of potatoes. Strength is not defined by one feat or another.
tack a zero at the end of your intelligence score and that`s your IQ,
Hickory: Again, nonsense. Intelligence encompasses far more than simple IQ tests would have you believe.
there are multiple ways to get a feeling of what your dexterity can be (how fast you can run, cycling, agility sports like soccer and basketball),
Hickory: Nope. Dexterity is primarily a measure of adeptness with the hands.
and if you want to know your constitution just get check up or reflect on your own medical history.
Hickory: Constitution, in a bodily sense, is your physical makeup. Are you fat, thin, large boned, small boned? That has absolutely no bearing on D&D constitution, which cannot be assigned to a real person.
You make some very convincing points. I'm going to have to rethink how I interpret ability scores.
That thing about IQ reminds me of a psychology class I took in college. It focused on mental illnesses so it was more like a psychiatry class. Anyway, my prof was saying that the concept of IQ started out as a way to see if a child required special needs in school. He said it wasn't really a big deal until it went to the States, and after that he said "when Americans get a hold of something, they usually make a mess of it". Before anyone gets worked up about that quote, those were his words, not mine.
In response to dtgreene's question, 25 is the highest stat allowable. I was obviously joking when I gave out my own stats but I don't think you can really compare a game with higher numbers to D&D numbers.
Let's say I make a barbarian in Diablo. I can see that he's pretty jacked and he has a strength of 100. I don't really think it's possible to calculate how he would perform in Baldur's Gate. That's more of a guesstimate though, I'm usually wrong about these kind of things.
