Is it possible to save him (convince him not to fight) and bring him back to Beregost, or do you have no choice but to kill him and claim the bounty money and whatnot?

Nope, no saving Bassilus. Dialogue with him leads invariably to fighting, with more lor less hostile skellies depending on dialogue choices.

Alright, cool. I ended up killing him anyway but I had an extra saved game just in case I could go back and do it again. Thanks for the info.
(SPOILER)

There are dialogue options w/Bassilus that end up in his undead creations having their magicks removed from them, whereupon they immediately fall so you don't have to fight them. But still have to fight Bassilus, of course.

Yeah I did that a few times with some of the dialogue combinations. I decided though that I may as well fight the skeletons and zombies for extra exp. points.
