I installed these two and shortly after started having crashes when entering houses. Now that I'm in Baldur's Gate city it happens almost every fourth time or so. Are these mods the cause, is there a fix without uninstalling and has it happened to anyone else?

It is most likely that you are using a saved game that was created either before you installed the widescreen mod, or with a different resolution. The widescreen mod makes save games incompatible with any other resolution than that which is selected at installation, because it alters fixed assets. This is why the mod gives you the option to convert saved games at installation. Bottom line: do not install the widescreen mod unless you plan on sticking to the same resolution from game start to finish.

Thanks. I was hesitant to try this but read that the saves would update so I thought it was safe. It seems I'll have to put up with it for the rest of this playthrough, as uninstalling didn't remove the problem (the game doesn't crash after uninstalling but instead minimizes and becomes unplayable when entering the thieves' Guild and possibly other locations).

Luckily there's not much left to the game, but I did also begin an evil playthrough that I guess I'll have to restart.

No, uninstalling will not cure the problem, because the problem is fixed (altered by WS mod) into your saved games. This is the widescreen mod's biggest problem, and the main reason I will never use or recommend it.
