As many who have graduated to extremely large capacity drives may have noticed, the original "Unenhanced" versions of all the old Infinity Engine games do an internal check for free space and will fail that check if free space exceeds what that check was designed for. This is especially painful in the case of Icewind Dale II since there is no planned Enhanced Edition of it forthcoming.

I now have a set of compatibility settings implemented via batch file which will (among other small fixes) set Windows to report no more than 2GB free space to each of these games and only these games. The check does so via file name and game publisher info located in the file, which should prevent false positives such as if you launch the enhanced edition (if all you own are the Enhanced Editions of the game, disregard as this fix isn't necessary and won't affect those versions). This applies to Baldur's Gate 1 & 2, Icewind Dale 1 & 2, and Planescape: Torment.

(This fix was originally designed by a redditor who designed it for me privately. They prefer to remain anonymous so they aren't bothered by requests to improve it down the line. It also includes a PDF listing instructions on how to create this compatibility fix for this and other games with similar checks.)

This doesn't prevent you from installing the games. You can select the option to ignore the warning, and then the installer will happily continue without issue. There's no need to muck around with compatibility settings. In fact, the README file from the original game even mentions this:

Note on Full Installations:
Windows 95 does not correctly report the free space on hard drive
partitions larger that 2 gig. Because of this, you may get an
"insufficient disk space" if decide to install everything from the CDs,
even if you do have the disk space available. To bypass this, just choose
to "install anyway" when you receive this error and installation will
proceed correctly.

Actually, this is a moot point for Icewind Dale II because the game's total install size is 1.5GB. The disk space warning will only show up for games larger than 2GB. I just pulled out my old discs to verify.

This seems like a lot of effort to work around simply clicking a single "Install Anyway" button (and it won't affect the GOG releases since they bypass the old Black Isle installers). But at least your friend got some experience using the Application Compatibility Toolkit for creating a standalone deployment. :-)

This isn't for the installers, it's for the main game. It solves an issue that only comes up on partition sizes over 2TB. If you launch in those conditions, the game will report this error and not give you an option to continue anyway. It will simply crash.

Once again, this has nothing to do with the installers.

DarkJaguar, I offer my sincere apologies.

I really did re-read your post several times, but I didn't catch on that this was for a POST-install issue. This is actually the first time I've heard of this issue, but then again -- I've never tried installing the classic 1998 - 2000 versions of the games on anything less than a 1TB drive. I'll confess: I snickered when I read "extremely large capacity drives" and just assumed you were referring to the old 2GB installer limitation.

If I may offer a humble suggestion: you may want to clarify your posts here -- and on PCGamingWiki (I'm assuming you and your friend also added the recent update there) -- to clarify that "large capacity drives" means ">2TB" and also that the issue is specifically with launching the game and not installing the game. As I mentioned, I intentionally re-read your post a couple times to make sure I wasn't missing something, and I STILL missed that this was for a post-install issue (and the PCGamingWiki article is literally just a one-liner with even less context). I think a lot of people will just brush this off as "yeah, yeah, we know about the disk space issue with the installer -- click ignore and move on." But this is a legitimately different issue that has only just started to become evident in the past couple years as multi-terabyte drives have finally moved into the realm of "primary system drive". But it's an issue that will start to become much more common in later years.

Again: my bad for jumping too quickly without asking questions. And I especially want to give a heartfelt thank you for being very graceful and civil in correcting my error. ;-)

aw man, DarkJaguar, you and your friend are legends. this "not enough free disk space to continue" error has been doing my head in for the last few days.
windows 10, "unenhanced", working with Baldur's Gate Trilogy, widescreen mod etc

installing it via command prompt as administrator is the way to go - thru the GUI didnt seem to work.

thanks again bro

Somewhere along the line, an error started occurring. You have helped me solve my problem.

This mega link is down, Is this file available anywhere else?
I guess I could run it off a usb stick or get to downloading and fill up the 8 terabytes of available diskspace.

I found gemrb which lets me play with a big drive and not buy the same game again.

This just happened to me for the first time in my near two decades playing the Infinity games. And it's infuriating since there's not a single solution available in the web save for this post. I don't suppose anyone has that fix and can share it? Mega link is long dead...

Is the issue for drives over 2TB, or if there's more than 2TB free space on the drive?

I've got a 4TB HDD, windows 10, and can happily launch BG2 from it and play without crashing.
Having said that, I'm also running a few mods, including the TOB Extender mod - would that prevent the error?
