Hi guys, F

Figured I'd try an Evil Assasin playtrhough, and want to build the cool evil party. However, if I recall (from many years ago) actually meeting some of the evil companions is a bit out of the way, and just going straight to them seems a bit cheesy, so my question before I do cheese it, is will I eventually run into Safana and Shar-Teel in a more organic way, but also sooner rather than later?

Also, any other tips? If I recall, the game was written with 'evil' being seen as a kind of 'kick-the-puppy' jerk in mind. Can I avoid that?

Thanks,

A
Can't help with the crew, but being evil has its benefits.

Yes, you can't realy roleplay evil without being punished for it, but here is what you CAN do:
- for the roleplaying aspect only evil party can get the Silver Pantaloon
- evil protagonist can make a deal in Watcher's Keep lvl 3 (teleport maze),so won't need to fight one of the big group of demons there, what Ialways found as a relief
- both technical and roleplaying way the Human Flesh Armor is for evil parties. And you even can get a nice halberd in Ust Natha.
- Evil Clreic is actualy fun, unfortunately Viconia can't be beaten for that title.

These are the main benefits for being evil.
Otherwise you won't be punished for plaing goody-good. The only problem can be to balance your reputation if youwant to keep evil party members, but that's problem for all protagonist anyway (until you get the Slayer Change at least).
Both Safana and Shar-Teel are found in optional areas so depending on how you're exploring you can find them early, late or never.

Thanks guys.

I decided to cheese it a bit, and went to get Shar-Teel whilst I was in the area, and somewhat broke the game (from a point of view I suppose) by killing those bassiliks and levelling up quite a bit.

Then I went to get Safana, and may as well get Vicona now. All I need then is Edwin and my evil party is complete.

Will have to decide who I want to drop if I keep Imoen though (Do I really need Shar-Teel AND Kargain?)
I've been playing BG1 EE, not classic, but my perception has been that evil simply isn't. Sure, you CAN tank your rep by kicking every puppy, but you can also do it by having drow friends and resisting arrest when you've done nothing wrong. (or, when you've done something wrong. devil emoji) Sure, Viconia calls me stupid and Xzar complains that I'm insufferably charitable, but they don't run off and my reputation never threatens to get so high they'll leave, so long as I don't make out with every flaming fist I see.
I kicked Imoen to the curb, btw. She's a great thief and maybe I'll run with her in BG2, but I love Montaron and Tiax and I'm definitely not keeping three thieves.

Think of it in roleplaying terms: your group is evil, but has a good publicity.
Evil in the BG saga (and many other games) is rather stupid.

Your average evil character is just ruthlessly selfish and kills whenever they feel there something to be gained.
Why would they care about doing good deeds as long as the pay is good?
Why would they care if everybody else sees them as good? wouldn't that make it easier to take advantage of them?
High rep gives store discounts. Let those foolish shopkeepers think I'm good is what I'd say. (and some storekeepers are rather unscrupulous themselves so why would they care if you're good or bad?)

There's a mod in the tweak pack that gives you a discount at low rep as well. RP reason being that they're afraid of you.
low rated
What we need is some realism, so if evil = selfish, it should worth it as long as evil =/= murderous psycho.

People should take advantage of goody-good people. Like if the character doin't ask payment THEN THEY SHOULD NOT GET PAYMENT.
Similarly if they always ask what's your problem: bury them with nonsense instead of giving them job!

If an evil party manages to get high reputation, they actualy should be the most successful, as their ruthlessness would be compensated by being famous, proving they are as effective as they look.

But Black Isle always made these naive games.

And they were racist and sexist and homofobic.
Like in Baldur's Gate you fail to get several quests (all through the saga), and fail to get sex.
And of course gay stuff only appeared ONCE, and that was in Fallout 2, and it was punished.
And they used the white "elves" = perfect, black "elves" = evil raciststereotype.
And in general the AD&D setup wholefully supported the churches, denying medical science.

Who da heck came up with the idea these xian games being satanic?

I fully agree that selfish evil parties should actually be rewarded MORE than selfless good parties. It should always be harder to play a good character than an evil one.

Baldur's gate was made by Bioware. Black Isle just published it.

While there was only one gay option in fallout 2 (and you were punished regardless of whether you took the straight or
gay option), there were several lesbian options in the game.

The idea of "dark" elves goes all the way back to Norse mythology and come straight from D&D lore. It wasn't made up by Bioware or Black Isle.

D&D is a fantasy world where gods and magic actually DO exist and are an active part in the world.

Actualy, false. If you did the hetero thing, you had to the option to say you made a medical examination, and you were released.

The other problem: sure, it was inherited from a time which was racist, sexist, religious. Is it good to keep these stuff in our culture, or time to change things?

Also, I did not complain in a fantasy setting, WHICH has gods WHICH are interact with the everyday life. I question the lack of existence of medical science, and the exclusivity of healing magic of clerics!
Sure, in ANY setting which has one or more diety, which even interacts, especialy for the benefit of the party, sure, why not make tiny miracles equialent to magic. But why not forget this "holy" crap, and update clerics to be scoundrel rogue class?
And as technology got introduced slowly through new classes, shift the medical magic elsewhere, add potion-medicine to other classes, and so on.
See? No reason to keep clerics as "embodiment of best thing after elves" status.
Two tips if you want to play Evil:

Install BG1 NPC Project and recruit Xzar&Monty.

In BG2 recruit Anomen, and goad him into taking revenge,

Drow are not black people. You see this distinction in both games. Dynaheir in the first game and Valygar in the second. Both NPCs are good aligned characters.

The power of the gods in D&D can regenerate lost limbs, cure apocalyptic diseases, can unnaturally extend a person's life to hundreds of years, and bring people back from the dead. That craps all over everything medical science is capable of now.

Medical science does sort of exist in the form of alchemy.

Valygar is arabic-looking.
And your examples justtry to dismiss the obviously existing problem: the white and black elves themselves. They are product of a racist age. Just like the "Gott mit Uns"-dollar/presidental pledge.
The fact is, clerics are not holy, the gods even in a fantasy setting are nothing else but powerful bullies who syphon people's money and vigor to ensure their own power. That's why the neutral optionis to remain human, the only thing the saga got right: goof and evil are the twosides of the same coin, and you should not choose either.

Btw, which power meddled with Baal's plans? Only thanks to the efforts of Irenicus Bhaal is not rebornin its offspring.

Surely there is room for racism, sexism and religion in a a tolerant and inclusive society?
