I am trying to get two systems on the same local network to be able to play BG1 together. Both systems have BGMain2.exe added as exceptions to Windows Firewall, and both are XP machines. Both can host a multiplayer game by themselves, but neither can join with the other. Any ideas? Do I need to mess with opening up specific ports in Windows Firewall? I've had to do this with other older games before, such as Diablo 2...

Any thoughts?

The only way I got it working was disabling my router firewall (only the host needs to do this.). How to do this depends on your router model but it's usually called demilitarized zone (DMZ) or "exposed host". After you're done playing you should turn the Firewall back on, of course.
This shouldn't be an issue, we are on the same router. I don't believe the router firewall blocks in-network connections, but I could be wrong. Maybe it blocks between wired and wireless connections? We are using a PC and a netbook, the netbook wireless and the PC wired.

By the way, I don't think you should have to completely disable your router's firewall. Try going to portforward.com/cports.htm and checking the ports you need to open for Baldur's Gate, then open them on your router. I'm thinking this is what I will probably need to do, only in Windows Firewall rather than the router, I just wanted to see if anyone else had a better (read: easier) solution before I go to the trouble.

Trust me, I already tried everything :) Oh I kinda missed that you mentioned you were on the same network, sorry 'bout that.
Getting Baldur's Gate to work in multiplayer on newer systems can be a huge pain.

Still didn't work after opening all the ports, eh? That's really weird (and annoying). Opening ports has always worked for me on other games, such as Diablo2 and Dungeon Siege 2, it's just excessively annoying because if I want to play online, I have to open the same ports on the firewall on my modem, the firewall on my router, and Windows Firewall...

So did you have to disable Windows Firewall completely as well?

I never had Windows Firewall (or any other Firewall) enabled to begin with. It's just superfluos to run a software firewall+router firewall

I had this same problem a few weeks back, the infinity engine will crash/stall/barf when playing MP games on modern OS's. So when the game starts press ALT + ENTER to make the game run in a window. Start up your game, connect, etc as usual and once you're actually 'in-game' just hit ALT + ENTER again to go back to full screen. Problem solved :-)

I would tend to agree, but I really hate the stupid system tray notification you constantly get when windows firewall is turned off.
DirectPlay games often have this problem even on a local network with software firewalls disabled.

Give GameRanger a try. Although it was primarily designed for solving online problems, it should also get BG1 working across your LAN.
My friend and I are also having this problem. I even turned OFF my router firewall and windows firewall so there would be no reason the connection couldn't be made. we've tried hamachi, running in windows xp service pack 2 compatable mode, and still nothing.
Log into your routers and disable UPNP try it :)
