Hi,

we've started a multiplayer campaign with a friend of mine recently. I own BGEE1 on Steam and he owns it on GOG. We would like to continue with BGEE2 after we're done so we bought it on sale this weekend here on GOG and I bought BGEE1 for myself again as well.

The problem is, we have no issues playing when I play from Steam but when I host the game on the GOG version, he does not see my game in Multiplayer. I can just close the game on GOG and start it on Steam and immediatelly he sees the game hosted and can connect and we proceed to play.

Any idea why Steam+GOG works but GOG+GOG does not? Possible solutions?

When I go to multiplayer playing the GOG version, I see different games hosted than I do playing the Steam version.
We can get around this at the moment by me playing my Steam version of the game and my friend playing his GOG version but I fear we might have the same problem with BGEE2 (we both own it only on GOG).

Only possible explanation comes to my mine is that you have different GOG and STEAM versions of BG:EE One may be 2.3 and other may be 2.5. Other than that, BG:EEs are basically the same game on GOG and Steam (I own them on both platforms).

we have figured it out, he doesn't have Siege of Dragonspear on GOG and while it is the same version of the game, it is not compatible with my game with SoG installed (version is the same, menu looks different)
why that is I don't know. the version of the game is the same and only BG1 is selected in the menus, yet completely different multiplayer games show up
so his game is compatible only with my steam version without SoG

That's too bad and an other bad move on Beamdog's behalf. I am glad you were able to figure it out.
I'd try raising this issue on Beamdog's forums at: https://forums.beamdog.com/categories/baldurs-gate-siege-of-dragonspear-discussion

The devs post pretty frequently on the forum, so if this is an issue they're unaware of, you can escalate it to somebody who can address the bug pretty quickly.

Or you can get banned for pointing out a bug and asking for help like hundreds of other people in Beamdog's attempt to hide game BUGs. Feel free to try your luck tho and let's see what will happen ;)

Not really the solution of the problem.

talking about BGEE here

MP is possible between the "GOG version" and the "steam version" via direct game / LAN / local MP (if you want over VPN [hamachi])
MP ist not possible (out of the box) via internet
that's because in steam BGEE has that dragonspear and faces of GnE DLC activated .. deactivating them makes it possible to play via internet GOG <-> Steam
