I'm debating on adding it to my collection, but wondered if I should wait. I've read reviews both here and on Amazon, and they're mixed. I tried to judge by the dates of the reviews, but found nothing definitive.

I'd like to get it, if for no other reason than playing BG2 on my fancy new gaming laptop and being able to see the full screen.

What happens with patches that I've read about? As in, if I buy BG2:EE today, and a patch is released in two weeks, do I get notified somehow? Or do I just periodically uninstall the game from my PC and reinstall it again right away? Sorry for the noob question, but I'm not much of an expert here.

I also searched this forum but didn't find a whole lot of specifics.

The GOG version does not have the DRM'y launcher, so patches have to come via GOG. You need to periodically check your game shelf for any patches. You don't need to uninstall.

Hmmm, so that's probably what that number next to "account" on my GOG page is, eh?

[clicks on it] Duh, yeah okay, now I see. That's what I get for buying a bunch of games and only ever playing Ultima and BG 1/2.

Thanks for the heads-up. I guess it can't hurt to buy it, then.

Have you played BG2 EE, and if so, was it buggy? I just read on the EE forums that there was a patch in December 2014, but I don't know exactly what it fixed. I think the OP in that thread said something like 500 known bugs?

I'm playing it right now, as it happens. I don't remember the actual number of original bugs, but there were a lot! Even now, there is 109 listed known issues not resolved, according to the forum. Having said that, I haven't come across anything game breaking, yet.
Hickory:

If you don't mind, would you post any major bugs here when you're done? Not necessarily in this thread but wherever. Thanks!

I would, meaning that wouldn't be a problem, but I am not the kind of person to keep notes on bugs, so unless there is anything glaring, I just overlook it. I've probably already come across some (possibly), but I couldn't tell you for sure. But I will keep what you ask in mind, and if I do spot any major bugs I will post them. Don't wait by the phone, though, as my play-through style takes a looooong time. :)
Yep, that's what I meant. Just the show stopper types that ruin your game. Much appreciated!
The worse one was that the main character can only turn into the slayer once… a script bug removed the icon that allows the slayer change. That was a while back and they know all about it so I assume it has been patched by now.
I played the GOG version of BG:EE and BG2:EE on Linux recently, and I didn't encounter any major/significant bug, it was a very smooth experience for me.

Only bug I can remember was a quest item for a minor side-quest not appearing in BG:EE, and I'm not even 100% sure I really didn't grab it and drop it/sell it at the wrong place.
I recently finished playing the Steam version BG2:EE and had only one glitch, that Jaheira couldn't cast the Harper resurrect spell, but that was supposed to have been fixed with the latest patch. I encountered no other glitches in the game.

I am currently playing GOG's BG1:EE and have had no major glitches and I'm pretty far into the game (I just got back to Candlekeep). The only glitch I've had in that is that there were TWO Rasaads next to each other in Nashkel waiting to be recruited.

For clarity, I'm playing it in Windows 7.
Though not a game breaking bug, more an exploit bug, I'm going to note this here, otherwise I will forget -- I've just come across it:

Roger the Fence in the sewers. I have my front man use Friends to get 22 CHA, go to Roger to sell stuff, and I can buy it back at less than he pays! Everything, so it's not an item thing. Needless to say, I won't be using him again.

Thanks to all of you for sharing your experiences. Those anomalies you're seeing don't really move the needle for me, so if those types of things are the only bugs left, then I'd call it bug free for my purposes. Guess I'll be spending another $20 here pretty soon, but that helps justify the ~$1K I spent on this ASUS ROG (which I can't get to run GOG BG2 so that it's visually playable). ;-)
