I have the following problem with BG2:
When I'm in Irenicus dungeon, some things cause the game to freeze when I try to rest. One of those things is equipping the helmet of Balduran. And before you ask, yes, that really is one reason. I can rest fine, but once I equip the helmet, freeze when resting.
There are other triggers, so I can't just ignore the helmet. The key to the next level also sometimes triggers this, so the game is unplayable.

For some reason, this only happens on my PC, on other PCs it works fine.

Does anyone have an idea how to fix this?

It looks like crashes like these are generally caused by 3 issues. You can work on them one at a time. (I would probably start with #3, then move backwards)

#1
Movie problem (not likely, but possible)

Your game may be having trouble loading a movie for the rest. See if this works:

Under [Program Options] in your baldur.ini

Disable Movies=1

#2

See if you have a corrupted saved game. Try making another new game and activate a problem area (like equipping Balduran's helm). See if it glitches.

#3

You may have a glitched character (most likely, I think) and/or cache

Follow these directions from Aries1001:

Please go into you cache folder and delete any & all files in there; only the files, not the folder itself.

You can also try cleaning the temp folder...

If this fails you can try getting this little neat program:

http://www.mud-master.com/shadowkeeper/index.html

It is a kind of 'cheating' tool that comes in handy in a situation like yours...

It is fairly easy to use...
From the bioware forums, this worked out for Philwag. He said:

Big Big thanks to everyone.
The Shadowkeeper Programm worked out somehow.
I just edited my main Character (raised strenght by 1 point and lowered const.) and it worked out. I can rest normally now, Cheer!!!
P.S. I've also run into some forums that said that they had problems resting with Jaheira or other NPCs in their party. You may want to remove them from the party to see if that's the culprit.

Actually, I am pretty sure the problem was caused by Shadow Keeper, since I usually did edit my characters (I was checking out the highest difficulty and was a little scared).
I basically did the same setup over and over again and I always got it to crash when resting, then I re-installed, startet a new game without Shadow Keeper and it worked fine.

I've kept the changes made with Shadowkeeper fairly simple (change stats, or a multi-class such as dwarven berserker/cleric) and had no problems.

Since SK is so powerful, major changes may cause problems.

I basically increased the number of spells I could memorize and that was it.

I can see that this may cause problems, maybe there's a limit.
I still think this result are pretty random (equipping a certain helmet - almost certain trigger for freezing upon rest, who would predict that?).

Did you SK the HP of the character wearing the helm?

Did you use SK to give the helm to a class that can't normally wear it ?
Both times, no.
Sometimes the game freezes when I try to rest before I even talk to the Sewage Golem, so the reason isn't the helmet itself.

I run another test and I managed to get to the hall of wands until the game started freezing, despite that I really provoked it this time, I used a sorcerer that could cast any wizard spell 60-100 times. So if it's the fact that he has to regain too many spells, it's still random _when_ that becomes a problem.

If you want an uber mage/sorcerer, I think it's much cleaner and bug-free to use a weidu-based package to modify the class, rather than individual characters (which may conflict with the class). Though it will affect all the joinable npc mages in the game. You can create a custom-mage class, but it's a bother assigning custom mage classes in-game. (FYI it won't affect non-party joinable mages. at least, not their spell selection or casting sequences)

I have a tweak that ups the sorcerer spell selection/spells per day a bit, if you're curious to try. You can also just use NearInfinity (recommended) and (after backing up these 2 files) modify the files 'SPLSRCKN.2DA' (how many the sorc knows) and 'MXSPLSRC.2DA' (how many he can cast). The files are fairly obvious in their mechanic once you look at them.
