I bought BG2 last night but I'm thinking I would rather buy BG1 and get through that first. I want to make a thief with the assassin kit, is it possible to make this in the first game and then continue with the same character in the 2nd?

Also if you have any general tips for that kind of character, what weapons and stats I should use, etc.
Yes, you can import your BG1 character into BG2.

Your PC's levels, skills, feats, etc. will carry over, but your NPCs' will not unless you use the BGT mod (see this post).
Ok so I managed to get BGT installed so I can play BG1 and BG2 as one game. I made a thief with the assassin kit and I chose katana and single weapon proficiency. I played through BG1 for awhile until I realize there is no katana skill in that game. :( Now I feel like I should start over or maybe just skip straight to BG2 because of the more limited character options.
You've installed BGT, so the point may be moot, but if you import a regular thief from BG1 into BG2, it gives you an option to pick up a kit at that point.
So would I miss out on assassin levels or would I still be able to max them out if I import? Wouldn't I end up with some thief levels and some assassin levels?
Kits aren't classes. Your levels are thief, either way.

That said, I don't recall how it handles the attack bonus/skills per level due to picking up a kit later.

According to this, all skills and stuff are adjusted.

Ok thanks for your help man, last question:

If I choose short sword proficiency now for BG1, are there enough points to go around that I can switch it to katana in BG2?

Awfully late reply BUT You could use the Shadow Keeper character editor to change your character and cancel the points from katanas and put them in something else. However you WILL find katanas with BGT but they'll only become available once you 're in Baldur's Gate (fairly pricey but you should be able to afford it easily by then). Hope it helps :)
What you need for a comfortable passing game?
1. Buy the first part of the game.
2. Create a character in the Baldur's Gate Original Saga, with the console commands, all the 6 characteristics of the character must have a value of 25.
3. Adjust the number of hit points your character, at least 200 points. This will allow the hero to resist spells and be more resilient in the battles with epic monsters like dragons or demons.

I do not advise you to play the game using the character "assassins." This is a weak hero. You can not beat the game completely such a character.
Choose originally a human. Klass - fighter, most preferable for the passing Baldur's Gate 1 You can later create a character dual-class, options are many.  The best pass of the game by dual class -
Fighter 15/ Cleric 16.
Weapon - hammer.
