Hi there,

I'm running Ubuntu 14.04 64bit and I wanted to return to BG1 (just 1). I wanted to download and install the widescreen mod and unfinished business but frankly I have no idea what to do -- I cannot find any working link to the widescreen mod and while I have found the UB zip, when running it by WINE from my Baldurs Gate folder I get the 'not a game directory' error. Would anybody be willing to point me to some step by step instructions for installing mods for the Linux version of BG1? Thanks in advance!

Most BG patches use a system called "weidu". There is a native Linux version of "weidu" tools, I always had more success using those than with wine (for the patching itself, then you need Wine for the game, unless you use the EE). You can find the Linux weidu tools on http://weidu.org/

Thanks. Unfortunately I have problems. I installed the GOG version of BG 1 which created some kind of additional wine folder wih BG inside. Following the advice from the site you linked I moved my weidu executables to a $PATH folder, but it seemingly cannot find the proper files (I'm trying 'weinstall widescreen'). I trying running 'tolower' first to make all names lowercase but it didn't work with the helpful message "Fatal error: exception Not_found".

Since the log files seem to indicate weinstall is looking inside the .wine folder, I created a symlink to GOG's BG installation there. No luck.

Any help would be very appreciated!
Never tried before with the GOG version (I used to play my old CD version, and now I'm playing the EE). But I do own the GOG version (as part of the "D&D bundle") so I just tried.

Here is how I did :

1. Install the GOG version, ensure it works without any mod/patch.

2. Download WeiDU for Linux from http://www.weidu.org/main.html#weidu, extract it, and copy everything from 'bin/' to '/usr/local/bin' (so it's in the $PATH).

3. Go to the directory where BG is installed within the GOG directory, ie "Baldurs Gate/prefix/drive_c/GOG Games/Baldur's Gate".

4. Run "tolower" and answer yes.

5. Download the Linux version of the widescreen mod from http://gibberlings3.net/forums/index.php?app=downloads&showfile=869 and extract it within "Baldurs Gate/prefix/drive_c/GOG Games/Baldur's Gate" (so it should be a "Baldurs Gate/prefix/drive_c/GOG Games/Baldur's Gate/widescreen").

6. Fix the permissions, the archive was made without write permission and the installer will need it. So a "chmod +w widescreen".

7. Run "weinstall widescreen" and answer the questions.

It's a tiny bit complicated, but it worked fine for me with only a bit of tinkering.

Thank you very much, but, as I wrote, at this point I receive the following reaction: "Fatal error: exception Not_found". I'd greatly appreciate any pointers!
I GOT IT.

The issue was the linux.ini file was incorrectly generated. It needs to contain exactly your linux paths to the game's data directory. My looks like that:

CD1:=/home/leszek/Downloads/Baldurs Gate/prefix/drive_c/GOG Games/Baldur's Gate/data/
CD2:=/home/leszek/Downloads/Baldurs Gate/prefix/drive_c/GOG Games/Baldur's Gate/data/
CD3:=/home/leszek/Downloads/Baldurs Gate/prefix/drive_c/GOG Games/Baldur's Gate/data/
CD4:=/home/leszek/Downloads/Baldurs Gate/prefix/drive_c/GOG Games/Baldur's Gate/data/
CD5:=/home/leszek/Downloads/Baldurs Gate/prefix/drive_c/GOG Games/Baldur's Gate/data/
CD6:=/home/leszek/Downloads/Baldurs Gate/prefix/drive_c/GOG Games/Baldur's Gate/data/
Now, the game looks very nicely in widescreen, but the GUI (text windows etc) needs adaptation. Also, the menus only take up a quarter of the screen. But hey, things are starting to work :-) Thanks again!
