So I decided to fire up Baldur's Gate original saga...

And EVERYTHING was a lot larger on the screen. All the graphic sprites, everything. So, there was much less actually on the screen.

This causes problems because the player's field of vision is now larger than the screen, allowing for enemies to shoot you from off-screen.

This never used to be the case with original Baldur's Gate on my original computer.

But I can't find a way to change the resolution, either in-game or in the config options file.

What's up?

Or am I spoiled by having played the last couple of runs-through with Baldurs Gate Tutu and 800x600 res (itself not great, but at least better) rather than 640x480?

Yeah, going back to BG1's 480p resolution might be too much, specially if you have a large monitor.

I would recommend using the Widescreen Mod to set resolution at 1280x720 and then applying this other mod that makes everything look neat.

640x480 will be 640x480 on any monitor, old or new. Your old monitor was probably smaller and a 4:3 aspect ratio, which means the game wasn't as stretched or big, therefore sharper. The same amount of sprites will be on a bigger monitor at 16:9, it will just be enlarged. A solution on modern monitors is to set the aspect ratio on your monitor settings to 4:3. Black bars will be placed on the left and right side to prevent the game from stretching to fill the whole screen.
Unless any of the user interface is cut off, then that's how Baldur's Gate always was. If the user interface is cut off, you have a problem with DPI scaling or overscan.

If you want to play it with somewhat correct size dimensions according to how it was back then, for most users (24" - 27" monitors) then playing with the widescreen mod at 1280x720 and the 1280x720 UI mod mentioned earlier will be the closest.

As a bonus if you're one of the 5% who's switched to a higher resolution monitor, 1440p or 4K is a perfect integer scale factor and you can use DxWnd to get much sharper graphics:

(it is however subjective whether or not that's an improvement)
Stumbled across this today and looks interesting, but I've never understood how people can play at higher resolutions with such small menus and videos, even at 1024x768 it gets hard to see them. Does that UI mod you linked to address that at all? The videos always seem to be an afterthought, if considered at all.

1280x720 is lower PPI than 1024x768.

The 720p mod doesn't adjust the size of anything (except text), just the appearance and positioning. Most importantly makes the text centered and limited width.

If you're having problems seeing things at 1024x768 on a 24"+ LCD, you either don't have your graphic drivers set to scale the game screen to full screen (do you have black bars above and below the image at all times?) or you have an eye sight problem.

I have my computer hooked up to my 50" TV and play from my couch (and work from there as well). Not everyone uses a computer from a desk.
