DKapple: I'd feel better if Larian would come right out and say that Beamdog is not involved in any way, but for now, I'll remain cautiously optimistic that this is a Larian-only product. In that case, hell, yes, I am pre-ordering this.
This is big news. Why would Larian or Beamdog hide the fact that they are part of development? Beamdog isn't self aware enough to understand the criticisms against them.
This is HUGE! What a great time to be alive! :D

darktjm: 2) As I mentioned in the official announcement thread, I am confused as to why this is Baldur's Gate at all.
You have ABSOLUTELY no idea what the storyline behind this is. The fact that it's (obviously) based around the city of Baldur's Gate and (presumably) contains plot lines connected to the original stories is enough to warrant the title. You sound like somebody on a crusade.

It isn't tied to the story for the first two games. This has been confirmed.

New story set in the same city, about 200 years later.

Kind of what they did with Neverwinter Nights. The story in 2 has almost nothing to do with the story in 1.

Ok, fair enough, but it's still based in the city of Baldur's Gate. Besides, with "gods" involved, what's 200 years?
*100 years

I really should have posted this here instead of the other thread, but oh well. XD Reposting so I'm in the right conversation!

---

I'm cautiously optimistic about this announcement. I'm glad that they're going with 5th Ed rules for it after the debacle of 4E. I'm not sure that illithids make for a good villain choice; to me, the illithids have always been the "puppetmaster behind the veils" pulling the strings of pawns. It's extremely rare (and extremely out of character) for illithids to be taking such a direct approach such as the trailer suggests.

The Gamespot article also suggested that the game will be developed with heavy Stadia integration, and that kind of has me worried. A Stadia game would basically mean that BG3 would not be able to be modded, which is like taking away a huge part of the appeal of single-player (or even multiplayer with friends, as opposed to an MMO) RPGs.

Either way, I'm quite excited at the prospect of returning to Baldur's Gate, although I'll wait for more information before deciding on whether to purchase this game, as it's still very early days.

EDIT: Oh, and has Larian revealed any details about the type of RPG BG3 will be? (i.e. will it be party-based like the original games or more single hero-style?)

I don't see how 100 years passing is a big deal considering that even though 100 years had gone by with 4E/5E, somehow the Bhaalspawn from the novel versions (aka the worst version) was still alive and present for the revival of Bhaal in one of the tabletop campaigns. And that was after the 100 year timeskip.
OK. How do I buy this. I don't remember wanting, no, desiring something so bad in years.

2 years ago we had gathered a group and wrote to Larian to make BG3. We never received a reply but I am SO glad it is happening now :)

Or Elves. Or Dwarves. Or Gnomes.

You could conceivably run into survivors from the events of BG2.

Baldur's Gate 2 was not set in Baldur's Gate, and did not involve even so much as visiting the city of Baldur's Gate. This established the fact that Baldur's Gate was not about the city, but about the Bhaalspawn.

At least with 100/200 years, we hopefully don't have to deal with another reinterpretation of Minsc and/or Imoen, but there are still elves to provide a lame tie-in with the originals (and the possibility that the humans may become undead or some such).

Also, re: my "crusade": I don't want another Fallout 3, thanks. Fallout now belongs to Bethesda in the world's mind, and the originals are the outliers. To a lesser extent, this has already happened to Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 with Beamdog's EEs. Games named as if they are proper sequels to the original that actually have nothing in common with the original other than some nebulous IP rights piss me off in general.

I'm not saying this will be a bad game. Just a badly named game. If they changed the name, I would just drop it until the game actually comes out, or at least a trailer that actually shows game rather than story, and judge then..

Bookwyrm627: 1) Read the thread. Specifically Post 3.
Don't know how I missed it, given that I reread the thread multiple times while editing my post. Oh well. I'll leave it in, for the world to laugh at (or more likely ignore).

Someone isn't aware of the licensed comic that involves Minsc post-Spellplague having been petrified and then revived 100 years after Baldur's Gate, huh?

Really? Even if not, I'm sure they could find some "or some such" to bring him back. Why couldn't they have kept Dynaheir alive in BG2 instead? I prefer mages, and her haughty sense of self-superiority was amusing. "For right! And I always am!"
