If I buy Baldur's Gate 2 from here can I play with my little brother just buying it once? Or is their protection against that? Because if I can't I'll just get Neverwinter nights instead.

i would want to know the answer to that as well. i got a home LAN setup with my brother. i think it should work, but an answer would be even nicer

Yes you can (as far as I know). Even the original BG2 disc version (that's the one I have) allows you to play multiplayer under the same roof with disc swapping.

EDIT: I should add that I'm not sure if it's allowed in the EULA. But I remember it was possible.
