I've been trying to play the Avernum series in OS X El Capitan (10.11.3), and while the game itself seems to work fine, whenever I try to save my game, it causes the whole thing to crash. I've noticed the same thing through Avernum 1-3.

Has anyone else had the same problem, or know what to do about it?

I'm getting the same issue, and I'm on osx lion. Pressing cancel or any other button in the save window causes the crash I noticed.
I think I may have figured out the problem. I looked up on winehq, avernum 1, they list the game using wine engine 1.4.1. Then I looked at the version of the engine that gog uses for the avernum wrapper. It uses engine 1.4.1NoXInput2. I switched the engine to 1.4.1, I can now load and save a game. The gog wrapper must be using the wrong wine engine. From what I've found out on how to fix the problem.
I've given it a go with Avernum 3, and it seems to have done the trick. Thanks very much!

I have the same issue. How does one go about switching the version of the wine engine?

First you will need to download wineskin winery. Then open wineskin winery and download WS9Wine1.4.1. Next you will need to find the wineskin.app inside avernum 1. Are you on a mac or pc?
Oh oops I must of been out of my mind when I asked that question. Ok locate your avernum 1 app then open its contents. Then go through these folders, contents/Resources/game, then open contents of avernum 1.app. Inside there you should find wineskin.app click on that to open it. A window will pop up, click on Advanced, then at the top tabs click on Tools. Under Wrapper Tools click on change engine, click on the drop down window to select WS9Wine1.4.1 then ok. After doing this the game should work. Sorry about the late reply, any more questions just ask.
