When I go to save a game the file interface just comes up at the root of the Documents folder. Could it have been put somewhere else? I doubt it because I did a search for any folder on my drive with *spider* and there wasn't any.

Is it ok if I just make my own save folder? Or is my installation probably screwed up?

Which Avernum game are you talking about?
If you're not seeing a "Spiderweb Software" folder in your "Documents" directory on Windows 10, there are a few steps you can take to resolve the issue. First, check if the folder might be located elsewhere, such as in the "Downloads" or "Program Files" directory. If not, try reinstalling the Spiderweb Software program to ensure the folder is properly created. Alternatively, you can manually create the folder yourself in the "Documents" directory. Remember to reach out to Spiderweb Software's support team for further assistance if needed.
