I'm having an issue where the game will just not respond every few minutes. Is there any way I can fix this?

This is Avernum 1 btw I don't know if the other games do it too. I haven't played them yet.

Avernum 1 as in the fiddly old game that was specifically remade because it was starting to break with age, or the Avernum 1 remake?

Avernum 1, the original. I guess it's not unplayable. I did some reading on Spiderweb's website and found out the right clicking to move helps a llot.
