Hello.

I'm a huge Starcraft fan (have been since the very first game was release back in "the day"), but I've always preferred the campaigns to the multiplayer. The look of this game rivals the look of Blizzard's masterpiece of RTS.

Will this game have a good single-player campaign? The description talks about the AI, and how good the multiplayer is, but not much about if the game has a good, robust storyline. I'm not keen on paying for a game only to find out it's mainly multiplayer with only single player skirmishes. That would lose me pretty fast.

Thanks!

EDIT: Read my next post before judging for yourself!

TL;DR: Looking for a good story-driven single player experience? Don't buy this yet. (More below)

I think the story line is very intriguing with humanity having "transcended" physical bodies and such, but it isn't explained or very detailed. The campaign is interesting but nothing too hard or nail biting (The toughest will likely be mission 4).

There's 11 missions of which there's 3 optional (These do add a tiny bit to the story).

That said, like you mentioned, the campaign can be completed in only a couple of hours (perhaps even less than 4 if you're really good). And the game is mainly multiplayer-driven. If you're looking for a solid single player experience outside of skirmish, this is not yet the game for that.

I'm saying not yet, as there's hints that there will be more chapters of the story released. The campaign is called "Episode 1: Imminent Crisis" and the last mission has a very open ending (Although you do get to blow things up so it's at least satisfying). I'm sure this "Episode 1" thing is reliant on how successful the game will be and may be a paid or free DLC.

This game will also support modding. It would be great if we could make our own single player story missions. I'd definitely be up to create a good campaign with a reasonable (not canon of course) story line.

Okay so instead of editing this into my previous post I thought it was a good idea to put this into a new one.

The devs have said something very relative regarding the campaign just yesterday:
____________________________________________________________________

(1) The campaign. It is true that the included campaign is not that in-depth. Our last RTS, Sins of a Solar Empire, didn't include one and we had not intended to make one for Ashes.

We decided to make a campaign based on feedback during early access with the general intent of it being an introduction to the game with most people playing the game in sandbox mode (skirmishes either single player or MP).

Now, my view is that while the customer isn't necessarily always right, only a fool ignores their customers. Therefore, here is what we're doing to do:

We're going to release a deluxe edition of the campaign ASAP that will add difficulty levels to it, more levels and provide a lot more story elements to it. This will be a free update, not DLC. It'll also have new stuff and difficulty levels hooked to a global high score so there's an incentive to replay the campaign.

So there will be a fully fleshed out campaign further down the line. Of course no one can tell yet how good it will be, but more missions and more fleshed out story sounds as a solid start for a single player campaign wouldn't you say? My recommendation for your remains though. Don't buy it yet if you are looking for a solid story-driven single player campaign.

But it's coming :)

Edit: looks like it automatically merged my two posts in one. Whatever :P

Xeneonic,

Perfect answer...thank you.

I have recently but a custom high-end 64-bit gaming system and this looks like it would be a great test for how good it can run.

I'm not a huge online multiplayer fan, though, but you adding a campaign will be perfect.

I truly appreciate the answer. Customer service and good communication mean a lot to me as a customer.

Thanks!
