Hi!
When i give a sword or something to my friends, it becomes an another weapon or doesn't appear in the inventory. For example, Virgil is fighting with an axe which is not available in the inventory. I don't understand at all what is going on!
If you guys could help me with it, i would appreciate!
There is a small button in the inventory screen to toggle a view that shows what your follower is using. They equip stuff automatically, sometimes wisely, sometimes not.
" From what I can tell, your NPCs use the weapon or armor's value (which they can tell, even while the item remains unidentified to you) as the basis for which items to equip. Which can sometimes lead to counter-intuitive results such as equipping a valuable cursed item over a cheaper but more beneficial one."

So, if i understand the idea, to give a big sword or a special item to our companion can change it in something different which is better for him. Right?

Ok Daliz, i'll launch the game and check. it's in english and i'm french, so it doesn't help me ^^
Thanks!!!

OK, i understand the way it works now, i'm a little bit foolish :s
See you!
Jumping in a bit late here, but one solution is to try to give each follower items that they can't or won't use: let Magnus hold the medium-sized armor, for instance (since he can only wear small) or give Virgil a gun without bullets, or a bow but no arrows.

You can also pay attention to your followers' sprites: if they look a bit different all of a sudden, they they may have equipped something you weren't planning on.

Lastly, if a follower upgrades their armor or weapon on you, then their previous choice will "suddenly" appear in their inventory: Virgil's starting robes, for example. That's yet another tip-off.
I really appreciate your help!
Also if a weapon is missing and IS NOT in their inventory anywhere, they probably left it on the ground after dropping it accidentally due to a critical miss.

I catch when I drop a weapon since Virgil verbally abuses me... had to reload earlier game when I saw Virgil using his fists (poorly).

Any way of knowing when followers drop weapons outside of being hyper-vigilant with them?

The combat status text that appears above your and your followers' heads during a battle* will alert you that a bad thing has happened (a critical miss, scarring, armor or weapon damage, or weapon dropped) in red text, as opposed to the white text that shows something bad happening to your enemies.

You may want to go to the Options menu, set it to Verbose, and the text speed to Slow, to make it easier to read. (If it gets too annoying, you can always play with the various options.)

Other than that, pay attention to their sprites during battle. If their apparent weapon of choice suddenly changes, it can only mean that they lost or broke the other one.

*Assuming that you haven't turned it off in the Options menu, either accidentally or on purpose.
