So this is weird... I am playing a good character who has never attacked anyone without provocation, my karma scale is 50+ in the good and I have no reputation in Ashbury good or bad. I go there to catch a boat and some random halfling in town attacks me. When I defend myself the whole city guard attacks me.

Anyone know what might be causing this? I have crept up on him and his "hate" meter is at -149! He is just a random halfling as far as I can tell, not an important NPC. I have done some Ashbury quests like the pigs and rocks and have gotten the tech armor, though I am using it rather than turning it in. I have not done the mayor's speech thing.

I loaded back all 4 of my saves and he does it every time.

There ARE some people who are hunting for your character, but I always could defend myself without being attacked by the guards, this is strange. Are you letting him strike the first blow?

I might not be, maybe he walked to me and then I hit him first. If I run across him again I will try that, thanks.

Sounds like a bug... there are some NPCs who will hunt your character no matter how good or evil you've been, but I think you're supposed to be able to fight them off without getting the guards after you. Have you tried getting him to attack you when a guard is in sight? This may lead to the guards attacking HIM instead of you. You could also try knocking him out instead of killing him (use blunt weapons or just fists, aim for his head).

Alternatively, have you tried using the unofficial patch? I forget the exact link but it can be found elsewhere on GOG's Arcanum forum. This is a fan patch that fixes A LOT of bugs and may very well solve this for you. I don't know about savegame compatibility though. I highly recommend the patch. There's also fan-made mods that let you use a higher screen resolution and improve the quality of the townmaps.

it happened to me as well i got attacked by some1 then a guard then it just stoped after that no problems
ps i taught them i lesson big time :)
