On the overland map you just click on a location until a dashed red line appears, then click the big travel button to be on your way.

If you're just starting the game, you're not going to be able to go very far. You have to find a way across the bridge in Shrouded Hills first. Shrouded Hills is sort of an extended tutorial. It's a relatively easy place with some quests for you to try so you can learn to play.

Once you find a way across the bridge the map opens up a lot.

Since you're in the U.S. I assume you're a native speaker. It would be good if you could use complete sentences in your posts. I want to help answer your questions, but I'm having a hard time understanding exactly what your problems are because of all the fragments and the lack of punctuation.

Sounds like you are trying to trigger the worldmap while still being within the boundaries of an area map (for the crash site?). Or is it the other way around?

Okay, so your map icon - the third one in the top left corner of the screen - switches between the detailed area map mode and the worldmap mode depending on whether you're standing within the area or outside of it.

If you want the worldmap, walk towards the edge of the area until your map icon changes to the round blue one - the crash site happens to only have one exit, in the bottom right corner, so you can't miss it - then click the blue icon; on the worldmap, you can easily travel between any marked locations by clicking them and pressing the travel button, like UniversalWolf said. You can't access the (walkable) worldmap from any random place in a location, only if you're past its edge - the edges aren't explicitly marked, so the idea is to just walk away from the place until you see the icon change.

If you want the area map, you need to walk back towards the area center until your map icon changes from the blue worldmap one to the plain one. Some later areas do not have detailed maps due to being small.

Also, you can always just walk between locations without using the map at all, clicking on the ground - it's slower, but good for exploring certain places. I definitely do not recommend trying this in the crash site area, though.

jayster333 is also playing Planescape: Torment. The amount of reading required there will likely improve his writing skills pretty fast.

That's a good point. I forgot about it, but you're probably right that this is the problem he's having.
