Running Ubuntu 10.04 with XFCE. On the 18th, I downloaded standard updates for the computer; nothing seemed objectionable, just standard security stuff. Unfortunately, it broke both Arcanum and my screen saver. Now, Arcanum just closes immediately after I try to run it.

Here's the list of patches I updated:

xserver-xorg-core (2:1.7.6-2ubuntu7.6) to 2:1.7.6-2ubuntu7.8
Running in a terminal means it pops open, then closes, TWO windows, and returns the following:
justice@melinda-laptop:~/.wine/dosdevices/c:/Program Files/GOG.com/Arcanum$ wine Arcanum.exe -no3d -doublebuffer
X Error of failed request: BadLength (poly request too large or internal Xlib length error)
Major opcode of failed request: 153 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 17 (X_GLXVendorPrivateWithReply)
Serial number of failed request: 1376
Current serial number in output stream: 1376
I'd like to say I tried reverting all those updated packages, but I do not know how to get the earlier versions; 'force version' just offers different versions of the later version, not the earlier. Also, I tried re-installing Arcanum to no effect.

OK, after more patching, it KIND'VE works. The F-keys and the Escape key don't work - so I can't save a game or exit the game.

My computer is an idiopathic junk heap, grmbl.
Funny, I'm running Xubuntu to prop up a borked computer too.
Now just to ask the obvious, you've only patched your Ubuntu install so far, not the game? Not that I know any great bug-fixing patches for Arcanum, but I thought I'd ask.

Unofficial patch. I think I might have put in the resolution patch this time, I can try reinstalling without that one.. I don't have enough screen size to fit the normal screen size vertically on a desktop, but I haven't gotten it to work in fullscreen yet..
Yup. Tried a reinstall minus the hires patch, no change. My enter key also doesn't work.

I assume you're using WINE, as I don't know how else to make GOG Windows games work in Linux. What version?
Note: I probably can't help, just thought I'd ask.
Currently? 1.3.31-0ubuntu1~ppa1~lucid1. I'd had to roll back to 1.3.27 earlier because 1.29 gave me issues, but it doesn't work either.
Actually, I meant which version of WINE.
Though I'm curious if you have this same problem with a fresh Xubuntu install. I know some folks had compatibility problems with their sound cards upgrading directly from Feisty Fawn to Hardy Heron.
That IS my WINE version.
I've contemplated a fresh install before, but have never heard a compelling case for it. I got to this version step by step with no funny business, and skilling a version has been often cited as a Bad Idea.

Heh. I feel a little dumb now.
This has supposedly been fixed in wine1.3.32:

Mackie lead me there earlier. though I personally find terra-arcanum to still be the most optimal place to get the patches available. http://www.terra-arcanum.com/downloads/
that is the order you want to use if i've read that right.

So I have had the same problem for the last few day with this issue

Linux Xubuntu 16.04.1 LTS and have resolved it

When in game and keys do not function as they should for example F7 does not save and ESC does not bring up the menu.

Press alt and after the "windows" key while in game and it should restore all key binding functions
