I'm at the part of the game where I need to get to Caladon to complete Willoughsby's quests as well as for other plot points, but I just can't figure out how to get there. I can't do it from the map, and every ship caption I've talked to in Ashbury, Tarant, and Black Root don't want to take me anywhere except Ashbury, Tarant, or Black Root. Even my buddy who took me to the Isle of Despair is like, "Hey! Any time you wanna go somewhere just ask!" and then he ignores me.

Did I maybe miss some trigger that opens the Caladon options or is there some other way I'm supposed to do this? ...or... horror... is my game borked?

Edit: Sorry I missed the part where you said you can't do it from the map. If that means that the river is in the way, read on below; if the location doesn't show up on the map read the bolded section below.

Can you not get there via walking? (though I'm actually not 100% sure you can "force" the bridge from the north side of the river on the Western side of the mountains... anyway)

If you have the location marked on your map (which you should - if not then you should try and talk to the people that triggered your needing to go to Caladon again, and that might fix the other problems?) you should, starting at Qintarra, head south to Caladon on foot. When you reach a river that runs through the map between the mountains and the sea just search along it until you find a location (which has a bridge - cross the bridge and run in a southernly direction until you are able to world map travel again; ignore the creature you find there if you want to complete a minor quest later). Then continue on south.

Sorry for not remembering more about what you might need to trigger the correct options to get people to take you there, it has been a long time since I played the game.

I also assume you're all patched up to the latest (unofficial) version and such?

If you want a 'shortcut' to Caladon, this was discussed in the thread here
http://www.gog.com/en/forum/arcanum_of_steamworks_and_magick_obscura/how_to_reach_caladon_early

If you want to reach it quest wise, I think this is the trigger:

NON SPOILER VERSION

Someone in Qintarra tasked you with finding a person that knows where the dark elves live. This person's home is Tarant, so you'll need to find him, or his academic works. If stuck , you can ask passer bys.

SPOILER VERSION

I think the trigger that puts Caladon on the map is when you find that Victor Misk has a copy of the book you want, and he lives in Caladon. The Library has a copy of the book that is about Terwillinger's book and tells what you need to know.

I am all patched up and I definitely did all the triggers mentioned in atkes' post. I think the problem was a glitchy savegame. I went back to a save where I knew I hadn't triggered the Caladon quests yet to try and redo the lead-up. (Unfortunately that was back in Qintarra before I talked to the Silver Lady... ugh... I'd done a couple of things since then, but I guess it could have been worse.)

I replayed the game back up to the Caladon quests and this time I was able to find a ship captain who was willing to acknowledge the city exists. I didn't do anything radically different on this playthrough, so I really think it was my save.

Thank you for the help! I didn't know you could get over that river! That will be good to know for the future.

I'm glad to help!
Though it is too bad that you ran into that bug. At least it wasn't a huge set back.
Have fun with the remainder of the game! :)
