So, I'm trying to install the high resolution patch for this game and it keeps deciding not to install for some reason. I've tried running both the install function and the other one with the wierd name, and it doesn't seem to affect anything. Just runs into an error or something. And I've managed to pull this off before somehow, so I know it works.

However, the reason I've had to go back and redo this is because when I fist did this, I experienced someextreme and painful lag in the game, went looking for ways to remedy this, came across a solution that involved deleting and replacing some files and ended up breaking the game, so I had to use a backup. So not only do I need help installing the damned patch, I need help with the lag I'm going to get afterwords, in a way that doesn't completly fuck me over.

Please assist.

Also, please point out and grammatical or spelling mistakes you can find, I have typed this in somewhat of a rush and don't want to leave a mess of a post.

Edit: I've justr tried the game again and even now there's some laga and stuttering. PLEASE HELP ME SIRS!!!

Just download the high res patch and follow their instructions exactly.

Use the arcanum exe file in the folder named backup when you install it.

Theres nothing else to be done. If your computer is modern it shouldn't lag terribly like it did back in the day, or stutter much at all except for camera movement, of which the framerate can be increased in the high res ini file.

Your grammar is fine now that you punctuate it.

Mind you I think I ran this once on an hd4000 inbuilt graphics card and it ran like shit.

Just make sure you download the latest (1.5) version: http://terra-arcanum.com/drog/highres.html#downloads
Does it come with the unofficial patch? Is UAP..... .exe http://ton-hur.mbnet.fi/files/Arcanum/

I was just reading some stuff on RPGcodex about the guy who made the mod. Jesus Christ that community can be funny, but they eat themselves I guess.

No, UAP and high resolution patches are separate (though both were developed by same person among many other things) and need to be installed individually (UAP first). You can find latest high resolution patch (HighRes1.5.zip) from the link you provided too btw.

No, it's not preinstalled as far as I know (last time I checked anyway). While there are couple games on GOG that come with unofficial patches preinstalled, they are more of an exception than a rule.

Uninstall completely and do a fresh reinstall. Add the UAP but no other mods. Test to see if playable; if so, add any other mods one at a time to see which one's the bug.

I personally only use the UAP, hi-quality town maps and level cap remover. Never got the hi-res patch to work right, even under Windows 7.
I've done both Drog's Arcanum and Arcanum Multiverse. I like 1.5 a little better.

Here is the link to the other HQ project Multiverse.

Well, I've done a complete unistall and redownloaded just the new patch, no townmap fixes, no extra content, no alternate lizardman - and the game's now gone completly fuck-up again. The screen goes discoloured, the menu naffs off to the top-left corner and the bloody thing's unplayable again. *Sigh*. Please help.
If you're on Win7+ you'll need the ddrawcompat wrapper as directdraw is deprecated. I don't know how any of this shit actually works.

Install the high res patch, open config.ini, set 'DDrawWrapper = 1 // 1 = install DDrawCompat wrapper', run install.bat

For whatever reason I found the wrapper included in the high res patch works better than if you download it off github.

If none of that works:

1. Uninstall Arcanum and manually delete all registry entries.
2. Reinstall latest drivers and unpatched Arcanum, run as admin from cmd.
3. Set compatibility to Windows 95.
4. Set all cpu processes to single core affinity.
5. Run dxdiag, and post the entire great big fucking thing here so we can pretend like we have a clue what all the numbers mean. If I had a dollar for every time a dxdiag has been posted for the IT equivalents of bush tucker men to um and ah at it...
6. Drop kick your computer out the fucking window. Or play New Vegas, whatever, it's all the same boring shit.

Anyway too bad the writing in this game is so turgid. Good day to you sir! Might I have another? Tally-ho!

If you're having issues with the patch still, feel free to come to the Arcanum Discord. There are plenty of people here who could help you!
Alas, I'm running windows 10, not 7, so I don't know whether those solutions will work properly. Also, is my dxdiag - enjoy:

Ahh, you stuffed it up, you have to paste the entire in directly, not link to it.

Win10 is Win7+, so you need the wrapper. I had the same issue at one point without it.

What on earth do you on discord (whatever that is) that can't be done on any of the squillion forums devoted to Arcanum?
