Hello everyone!

There aren't many topics about this particular build (maybe 2 threads and they are quite old) and I would like to make one myself.

I really want to replay this game, because I haven't played it in a very long time and now with all the mods and patches that I have installed it's sure to give me another great experience.

I've always been fascinated with the Tech aspect of Arcanum hence why I am interested into making a Tech heavy build, but for the life of me I almost forgot everything about this game (I haven't played it in 10+ years). Also I never did a diplomatic character/build either.

I plan on playing on a lower difficulty just to enjoy the story so keep that in mind.

I wish to make a character that's both very persuasive/charismatic and a very good guns specialist/slinger and I would like some "specific" help (what stats to boost at which levels..what background/stats to start with etc) if it's possible (I will play any race except gnome).

I appreciate any help that you guys can give me regarding on how to make this character and I await patiently for your advice on this build.

Thank you in advance.

I'm doing a gunslinger/grenadier build. So far got a human with the Miraculous Operation I think it's called. It gives Perception, which is fundamental for a gunslinger as far as I understand. Altho iirc that background puts a penalty on charisma. I'm level 4, put some points on fire weapons, one point on bows just because, a little bit on haggle and one point on throwing.
Basically if you want to be a gunslinger you'll need Perception, a little bit of Dex and some Charisma and Beauty if you want that diplomatic style. Altho as far as I understand it, Intelligence plays a mayor role on dialogs.

Sorry that this's maybe not the in-depth that you asked, heck even if something might be wrong, as I don't know too much of this game either, started playing yesterday since a long time too, and even that time I didn't complete it xD

But ye I hope this advice was of help, and if I'm wrong on something pls ppl don't doubt on correct me, might as well learn something new too myself xD

Welcome! First, a caveat: firearms are surprisingly weak, until you can find/buy/build the best weapons near the endgame. Bullets are expensive; and while you can mitigate that somewhat by making them yourself, gathering the components is akin to grinding.

To be charismatic, you need Persuasion, which has Charisma (CH) as its prereq. You'll want 20 CH eventually, both because it will allow you to choose and keep any available follower (regardless of alignment) but because the Persuasion master quest is the only one to require a full 20 (rather than the usual 18) for complete success.

To be a gunslinger, you'll need Firearms, which has Perception (PE) as its prereq. To build firearms (not required, but the only way to get some of the better guns) you'll need the Gun Smithy college, which has Intelligence (IN) as its prereq.

Dexterity (DX) allows you to fire more often. To save on points, you can let slide Strength (use followers as pack mules), Beauty (it only affects first impressions), Constitution (buy or make Fatigue restorers), and Willpower (unless you also want to become a master Haggler, which kind of ties in with the theme of this build).

Also, spend two points into either Melee or Throwing early on, so you're not skunked should the bullets run out. Throwing also helps with grenades, should you decide to invest a few points in that college.

Put one point into Explosives, and buy the Bullets schematic ASAP. As a bonus, you'll be able to make Molotov cocktails, which are far better than guns in the early game. (This is also where Throwing will help.)

If you want an early tech bonus, consider starting as a Dwarf. Definitely don't be an Elf or Half-Elf. Any background that doesn't penalize PE, CH, or IN (or give you a reaction penalty) is fine; you can also go with no special background whatsoever. (Miracle Operation is an excellent choice, since it gives you big bonuses to all three of those stats.)

There are people in the game, especially in Tarant, where you might want to consider spending a Fate point to pick their pockets for a choice firearm or other item; no spoilers here, but PM me if you want 'em.

Also, be aware that Virgil is so dedicated, that he will literally faint from trying to heal you, even if your TA is too high and the healing spells fail more often than not. Buy him a supply of bandages, or keep Fatigue restorers on hand.

There are also four followers in the game who can each get to level 4 in two tech colleges: Jayna (Herbology and Therapeutics), Magnus (Smithy and Mechanical), Vollinger (Chemistry and Gun Smithy), and Sebastian (Electrical and Explosives). This means you can have them make stuff for you, such as healing salves, charged rings, repeater rifles, etc. They do have to be in your party; you can't just go up to them and say, "Build this for me, please."

The tech manuals (available for sale at Tarant University) will be a godsend, allowing you to build from learned schematics without investing points in other colleges. They are, however, pricey and expensive; and their effectiveness is tied to your IN. Consider investing in some potions of IN to use right before you plan to build something, so that you don't need to purchase quite as many.

One last protip: You only get 64 points to play with (unless you install the Level 127 hack, which effectively removes the XP ceiling). So plan out your points beforehand; few things are more frustrating than being 3/4 of the way through the game, already at level 50, and with no more points left to finish your build.

This should get you started. If you have any more specific questions, feel free to ask.

Thanks a lot for the tips! I tried messing with some builds and I've been thinking that's a bad idea if I go with Half Elf because her str/con is so low at the beginning of the game if I go with Miracle Operation.

With that said..I've read the other threads about this particular build and I've read that investing 2 points into Electrical early will get me some nice Dex rings.

Most important part of the beginning that I want to know is what exactly to buy from the store (just before starting the game) and with that to start with.

So after reading all the threads on this forum about it and your tips I've thought about Dwarf with Miracle Operation, 1 point with Firearms (2 total) , 2 in electrical, 2 in Gunsmity for starters.

Now at the beginning (I will play on easy because I wanna experience the story and dont want the combat to bee that difficult) I will invest 1 point in explosive (and then grab the bullet schematic to make my own).

Then after getting more levels what should I focus on? Focus on Charisma and try to get 1 point in Persuasion so I can get Sogg and get past Lukan first? I've read that Fine revolver will be great to get some money and be a great weapon. Also Charged Rings I should focus on to get in Shrouded hills? Should I focus to get 4 firearms skill asap? Or just leave 2 at it and focus on charisma/persuasion first.

Regarding level cap....yes I have the level cap unlocker to level 127.

Okay. From the starting shopkeeper, I recommend picking up the boomerang (if you plan to use Throwing as your backup attack) or the fine steel dagger (if Melee). The boots and robe are also a good idea. You could also pick up your first copper ring, but I would hold off on buying any bullets, since they'll be cheaper almost everywhere else.

On that note, I'd hold off on investing in Firearms and Gun Smithy first. There's a gun available in the first town (as part of a simple quest) that's actually a bit better than the fine revolver you'd be able to build. Better to give yourself at least 6 DX and one rank in Melee or Throwing; you'll need to get your DX up to 9 (by spending points and/or wearing charged rings) to be able to add a second rank anyway.

(If you'd rather stick to your plan — which I can understand and support for role-playing purposes — then plan on letting Virgil and your other followers do the bulk of the fighting, at least early on.)

Sebastian could make charged rings for you, but since he's in a place it won't be safe for you to visit until mid-game, I can understand wanting to craft your own rings to boost your DX earlier than that. Also, be sure to seek out and pay for Firearms apprenticeship, since that will also add a speed boost to any guns you use.

As long as your CH is at least 6, you'll be able to add the one rank of Persuasion you'll need to thwart the bridge thieves. Sogg requires a CH of 9; he makes a decent tank and a good pack mule, but if you do add him, plan to leave him behind at some point in favor of more interesting followers.

Two ranks of Persuasion will see you through all of the early game; you won't need three until you're ready to visit the place you can only go once, and five once you're ready to take on the Persuasion master's quest. So yes, I'd focus on Firearms first.

Other options: Repair lets you fix broken weapons and armor, while Spot Traps and Disarm Traps also happen to make use of your high PE. None of these are critical, so don't feel pressured about adding any of them early on.

If you've got the money and the skills it's possible to get Firearms up to Expert in Shrouded Hills.

I suggest combining Electrical (as a secondary college) with Firearms. Electrical has a lot of nice inventions on it's own, and it will help you to build the best firearm in the game...eventually.
