So I went to the forbidden pit to level my gunslinger and things were going great at first. However recently I've been getting trapped in combat mode even after all enemies are killed, as if there are still enemies nearby. This is irritating because it means I can't immediately rest for a day and make more enemies show up. After running from the area where combat took place I'm able to exit combat mode like normal, but this is pretty inconvenient and I've never had this problem before. It doesn't just happen in the pit either, but everywhere I go. Can anyone help?
Just a thought: are you absolutely sure you're killing all your enemies, and not leaving any of them unconscious?

Went to go double check if that was the case. All enemies are definitely dead, and right clicking still does not finish cbat mode. :/
All right, try this. Walk at least one full screen away, sleep for a full day, and then return. This will (or at least, is supposed to) eliminate all the corpses, leaving at most bloodstains on the ground.

Alternately, try using the world map to walk to a random point nearby, and then back to the Pit. It should reset the area in the same way.

If the problem persists, then I'm stumped. You may have a corrupted save.
Figured it out. Apparently having to many followers was the problem. I had four human followers plus dog with me. I dismissed all the humans and kept dog, and now I'm able to finish combat normally. Not sure why I ran into that problem. I was in many fights with the while group for a good deal of time. Thank you for your response and help anyway!!
Having that many followers shouldn't have made a difference. What may have happened is that you could have upset one or more of them, either with friendly fire (accidentally hitting them with a ranged weapon) or by attacking someone or something that they considered good-aligned.

But if you found a solution that works for you, great.
