Hi folks,

I purchased Anno 1701 last week and successfully played it 3-4 times. Now when I start the game, it stops at a black window and another window appears behind it saying "Unable to initialize Direct3D." Has anybody solved this without reinstalling the game?

Thanks.

Hm, try to open and edit the file "engine.ini" with an editor (back it up first). Right at the beginning, there are the lines
<ScreenXSize>1680</ScreenXSize>
<ScreenYSize>1050</ScreenYSize>
showing I play in 1680x1050. What happens when you change that to 1024x768?

Hey thanks for the reply. I ended up reinstalling the game and that fixed it for me. If it happens again I'll try your suggestion.
Cheers.

I managed to get it working on a surface go 2. So much for it not running on onboard graphics cards. All I did was install directx june 2010 or directx 9.0c. I then had to restart the tablet and it worked.
