Sorry to be anal about this, but I've been burned with GoG titles in this way before (most recently The First Templar).

I'm well aware that this game is advertised as having full controller support, but I want to know if it's actually done properly or if it's just remapping KB/M inputs.

Proper controller support has 360 degree movement on the left joystick, as well as the "gradual acceleration" where pushing the joystick a little bit will make your character walk and pushing it all the way will make the character run. Simply remapping 8-directional WASD on/off movement is NOT acceptable IMO, especially in a third person game.

Proper controller support also means that the right joystick/camera control has some gradual turning and is not simply an on/off thing mapped to mouse input. If the game originally featured aim assist on Xbox, it's here too.

Proper controller support also means that you can "tab" around the menus with the joystick and/or triggers and/or shoulder buttons, and not be presented with a literal mouse pointer that you have to move around using a joystick and painstakingly line up with the menu item you want to click on (I'm looking at you, THQ Nordic games). However, this is one slightly less critical than the previous two and I can sometimes get used to it.

Thanks,

When I played this a couple of years ago it had native controller support. So if you have a xinput compatible controller it should work out of the box. Worst case scenario you can always refund the game.

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, it doesn't actually answer my question and only reiterates what I already know.

In any case, I did actually end up getting the game, so I will answer my own question in case anyone who wants to know sees this in the future.

- 360-degree left joystick movement is present. There are two movement speeds, walking and running (plus sprinting but that's a different button), and the stick is a bit overeager to go from walking to running, but it's workable.

- Right joystick has gradual turning and a pretty wide range of sensitivity options. It is not a great turning curve however - finding a good mix between turning fast enough at the edges of the stick and having enough precision near the center of the stick is difficult, though I suppose that's an issue for a lot of games (some seem to have done it better though, but maybe that's because Alpha Protocol doesn't seem to have any aim assist).
There doesn't appear to be any aim assist for basic shooting, so lining up shots can be tricky, but there are RPG-type abilities for things like time slowdown, and I think I read something about assault rifles having assisted aim when the skill is upgraded.

- Menu control is excellent. There is no dragging around a mouse pointer with a joystick. I sort of wish switching between mouse and controller were a bit more smooth - it has to be changed manually in the settings, and if the joystick "disconnects" (e.g. my wireless Xbox controller goes to sleep because I took a break) I have to re-enable it manually, but all in all the menu is a good controller menu.
