Is there any way to run besides double tapping the forward movement keys? It's fine for general use but when I need to haul ass away from an enemy I either just stand there tapping my keyboard like a madman or get brutally slaughtered. It almost seems random as to whether I will run or not. Loving the game so far, this is just my only gripe.

It's the only way to run, unfortunately. Although, I've found that you can run easily if you hit enter while moving forward, then hitting forward again as soon as you leave the action/inventory screen. It's better than tapping forward constantly in an attempt to run, specially towards the end of the game.

Try lowering CPU-Cycles in DosBox by pressing CTRL+F11. That should make running easier.
