I completed this game back when it was new, and I seem to remember throwing the lamp at the tree in the tunnels. I've lit the lamp and thrown it at that tree at least twenty times now. It just goes thunk and falls into the water. Then I have to go fish the lamp out of the water while chubby swamp monsters attack me. Am I doing something wrong? I've aimed at different parts of the tree, I've tried throwing it from the close-up view and the wide angle, I've tried throwing it from the water and from the platforms, I just can't get it to catch on fire.

It is hard to tell with such a dim description of the situation, but I know that this usually happens when you forget to place the amulet in the altar at the foot of the tree

Do you mean the talisman? Or is there another amulet? The talisman is on the altar.

Mhhhh.... You put the talisman you found on the library's secret passage on the altar, use the lighter from the smoking room to lit the lamp (matches won't work as they will be wet) and on the same camera you are after putting the talisman throw it to the tree. It might be that you got a weird angle?

I beat this game back in the day as well and I'm having the exact same problem...
and yes I am relighting the Lamp with the Lighter, and I'm imitating EXACTLY what I've seen done in a walkthru on Youtube.

Just finished it, and it's a bit tricky to find the right spot. I actually stepped back from the altar so that the camera angle changes and then threw the lantern from the left of the altar. This way you could better see where it was flying and then adjust it.

Drop/lay the talisman on the altar then thrown the lamp. Since aim can be a problem just go back one screen instead of throwing the lamp while near the altar.

Did anyone solve this? I'm having the same issue, really frustrated that I've gotten this far and really enjoyed the game only to be foiled by what appears to be a glitch. Any joy?

In another thread someone mentioned having the same problem for a while and eventually figuring out that the reason was because he left the room before setting the tree on fire. Once he came back and tried it, the game wouldn't allow it to happen anymore. Then he loaded a earlier save, completed all his goals for the room in one go and it worked.

Unfortunately I can't confirm if it happens like this because i just uninstalled the game :(

I completed this on 3DO many times (love the game). I always stand above the water on the (lower) platform directly across from the altar. Alternatively, standing directly in front of the tree, up against the altar should work too. The throwing is wonky and inaccurate to be sure. Good luck.

This is one of my all time favorite games. Why oh why can't someone do an HD remake of this game? Anyone ever seen the video on youtube of a remake that was at one point in the works.

I completed the game recently using GoG's download and it works. You may want to walk away from the altar after dropping the talisman to throw the lantern.

I can confirm this. I entered the room with the tree, picked up the hook, didn't get what else needed to be done, so I opened the nearby stone door with the hook and wandered off. Later I returned, placed the talisman on the altar, lit the oil lamp and threw it towards the tree. Tried it several times, nothing happened. Then, tested this theory, loaded an earlier save, did the same again, and this time the tree caught on fire on first try.

Hi. I was just wondering if you ever solved the problem you were having?

Having looked at the game code I can tell you what the game wants you to do is it's expecting you to be coming from the maze when you "fight" the boss. So as people were saying, if you return via the other entrance later, one of the flags is wrong and it won't let you kill him. However, to be precise, all you need to do is to return to the maze once through the gem door and everything works fine. It's just another little quirk that was left in from rushed testing.

You can mark this as solved probably.

EDIT: Technically it's not a flag that's wrong, some scripts are just executed in the wrong order that make the lamp be doused before it has time to torch the tree. They were essentially just lucky that it works for most people when they play it the way they thought they would.

The talisman insertation stops the fire balls a second later u ve to throw the lamp without using the lighter in direction of the ugly frown inside the tree.then all lizards disappear because of the falling rocks from above.all this must happen qickly cause the lizard is onto u.u dont ve to climb on the stone in front of the tree just stand in front of it.do snake lines to get to the stone in front of the tree to avoid fireballs.do all this in the run mode (double arrow up an hold).save often to avoid panic..
