Hi.

I bought the game yesterday and i have the following problem: My cursor ingame is lagging and there ist a "bigger square" behind it that is shining and blinking through (hart to explain). Does anybody else have this problem, too? I wanted to change the compatibily mode but it's locked to Win 98.

Regards

The problem persists since 2010.
To my knowledge, the GOG team hasn't found a suitable solution that would work for everyone.
The problem has been discussed on the forum before (I would post links to the threads, but can't since I'm new here), but none of the proposed solutions worked for me, so I'm still looking for a suitable one.
I was trying to fix this problem but no success. I found my original old copy of the nations gold and installed it from cd.
So the error with the flickering mouse cursor was the same. But after i installed dgvoodoo 2, a directx wrapper,
to the install folder of the game, the flickering cursor was gone.

Then i tryed dgvoodoo2 with the gog version but no success.

When you want to play the game without that problem try to grap a original the nation gold and use that
with dgvoodoo2.

I tryed all with windows 10 pro btw. A funny detail, on my windows 7 pro machine i have no problem with
the gog verison.

Its a pity for the gog version since the game is for me a childhood treasure even when its not a superb game :D

Have you tried this other wrapper, Narzoul's DDrawCompat? https://github.com/narzoul/DDrawCompat/releases

As to dgVoodoo, I've been using it too (2.55.2) with the GOG version and it works, well, randomly - and only when:

- disabling Win98 comp. mode applied to the game .exe file (or shortcut) - to be able to change it if it's still greyed out, hit 'Apply for all users' in the compatibility tab (or just restart your PC first, sometimes it's enough)

- forcing window mode in dgVoodoo (from the Global tab and unticking the 'application controlled fullscreen' and 'disable alt-tab' in the DirectX tab, something like that). Try alt-Enter to force the game into window mode and maybe restart it.

- also dgVoodoo needs to be pointed to/copied to the \bin folder for this game, it's where game.exe is

At times the cursor is fine and other times it still looks ok but it 'locks' the game whenever it moves.
ya, that bin folder is the same as in the original version. There i put it. And how i said i do the same to
both versions and the gog version wont accept dgVoodoo.

I try DDrawCompat as soon as i can. Thanks for the hint.
Back from testing. Wooooohooo! You are amazing :D Thanks for the link from Narzoul's DDrawCompat.
That was the Solution. I installed the GoG Version again and tested a lil bit around with dgVoodoo then
i drop as last action for the day the ddraw.dll from Narzoul in the bin Folder. Taadaa it works like
a charm. Fullscreen, perfect mouse animation and flawless scrolling.

My steps: install nations gold -> deactivate the Windows 98/ME compabilty mode from the game.exe,
otherwise i got stuttering at scrolling and minimal mouse animatiion flaws -> drop the ddraw.dll in the bin
Folder where the game.exe is.

*Thumbs up*

Btw if i deactivate the compability mode and use dgvoodoo you can only play in window mode, in fullscreen
i got a irritating stuttering when i want to scroll, think it is that what you discribed. Anyway, now it works.
Worked for me too with dgVodoo and ddraw.dll. Thank you so much :)
I've had this problem for years and finally dropping ddraw into the bin folder fixed the problem. Thanks man you're a real hero!
Try running the game on Linux under Wine. For me it runs just awesome now (Fedora 31 KDE spin). On Windows it just doesn't run - well, not in a playable manner anyways...
Thanks! adding this ddraw file to the bin folder completely fixed my problem with cursor :)

Thanks, mate! Just dropping it into the bin folder fixed the issue!
No need for the dgvoodoo2 or compatibility settings change for me.

The ddraw.dll worked for me as well!
