Hello,

You need to install Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 redistributables. If you're using 64-bit system, there is a link for x64 version on the bottom of the page.

hmmm, have that problem too: My system: XP sp3 on a x86 hardware.
Errormessage: "The procedure entry point SHGetknownfolderpath could not be located in the dynamic link library shell32.dll."

C++ 2010 redistributalbe is installed -> 10.0.40219 , also the latest patch provided by Gog.

After some googleing it looks like SHGetKnownFolderPath is only available under vista and later, the coresponding XP function would be SHGetFolderPath. (e.g. https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!topic/comp.os.ms-windows.programmer.win32/30V_Hqxw-_w[1-25])

Was Alan Wake only Vista+ marked?
(Beside, I get also a black screen on game start after the remedy logo, staying in a frozen state there forever.)

Hmm, the Language Setup actually uses SHGetFolderPath (just checked my code) and should work on XP. Do you have the latest patch installed? If you do and still have that problem, let me know.

As for the problem with black screen - please contact support.

I have it installed, just yesterday, installed the game and instantly the patch (did not tried to run the game without patch, what I regret now). Will take a deeper look into the executables later and report back.

Ok, here the exes (beside, pretty hard to find the actual version, if the program is not working...no changelog or readme):
C:\Program Files\GOG.com\Alan Wake
6,83 MB (7.163.392 bytes)
Modified Thursday, 10. May 2012, 10:11:30

C:\Program Files\GOG.com\Alan Wake
size: 2,90 MB (3.043.680 bytes)
Modified Friday, 15. June 2012, 14:34:54

patch_gogalanwake_1.0.3.16.exe
after trying to re-installing the patch I got the version info: Update 1.0.3 (game version 1.06.17.0155) Update already applied.

Just noticed under My Documents\Remedy\AlanWake_GOG_Version are many crashdumps e.g. AlanWake_167103_20120809-002823_3042144.dmp

I still get the SHGetKnownFolderPath error on language selection. If I can provide some other infos (or the executables?) to identify the issue please tell.

I extracted the Language Setup.exe from the patch to make sure it's the right version, and it started on our Windows XP without a problem, so I'm pretty sure this is not the case of Vista-only function.

Contact support about this issue, it will be easier to diagnose both problems that way.

Thanks, I will contact the support about the language selection issue.

The second problem, the black screen on start, I solved already, was in the end my fault. ;P While I was tinkering around with the graphic cards settings to bring DKII to run with a 1600x1200 resolution I also deactivated DXTC support (and forget about it). After reactiviating Alan wake worked well (but pretty slow, even on lowest resolution and settings, I achieve only 8-15 fps with a Radeon HD 3600, looks like time for an upgrade ;) )

OK, finished today Alan Wake (without language selection). Now I installed Alan Wake: American Nightmare and here the language selection works, hope this helps somehow in finding the issue.
