Have just bought this game and it runs but without any sound effects and music. Other games work fine.
Hi Anthony,

I am sorry to read you are having issues. We have one other report so far, which can be found here:

http://www.slitherine.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=528&t=87601

Could you please follow the same steps as listed there and provide us with a DXDIAG?

We would really appreciate your help in tracking this down so we can solve the issue quickly.

Best,

Same, no sound or music.

Thanks for looking into it Surtur and I will be happy to give you any information you need (dxdiag, etc) when I get home to my computer (in ~10 hours) but I'd rather not have to register to yet another forum to communicate about this issue.

One thing I can confirm is that just like the others said on your forum, I do not see the game in the Windows Mixer, but the launcher does have sound (only the actual game doesn't have any sound, doesn't matter if I start it through the launcher or directly by running agressors.exe).

And another thing, I looked into the game log file, I see lots of things there (mostly about initializing 3D/OpenGL stuff) but no mention whatsoever of "sound" or "audio". Should there be a mention for any of those words in a log file with a working game sound?
For anyone else running into this: at the linked forum thread one of the complaining users discovered that the lack of sound issue is because of not having WIndows Media Player installed. I can confirm that installing Windows Media Player (in my Windows 10) did the trick.

PS: I don't think this is a proper solution as other games do not need Windows Media Player to have sound support but it should work for now until a proper fix is issued.

This is STILL an issue and - in my case - not solvable.

I am on the most recent Windows 10 Pro (Preview Build 18908 ...) and spent more than one hour trying to install WMP with no success.

WMP is pre-build into Win10, BUT it was uninstalled due to EU laws, decoupling WMP from the OS. Trying to re-install it "Add Feature" fails, due to a bug Microsoft found a year ago and does not seem to have fixed it, or blocks users, with EU IP addresses from installing? (I honestly do not know).

Trying to install older versions of WMP fail (WMP10/WMP11) since Win10 detects me trying to install their older player and prevents it from happening.

Installing WMP-Classic did not solve the issue neither. Trying to reset the 'default' app in Win10 Settings, just hooks up to VLC (which I installed).

No other game - more precise - no other OGRE engine based game - has this problem. I run around 2000 PC games (10TB) on this Gaming PC.

This issue would be mildly amusing as it is silly, if I had not spent over an hour trying to find a solution ... and still failed.

In the end, it is not a big issue, though, since you can play the ambient wave files directly from the folder ... and the music can be played with any media player ... if you like "Roman ... Disco"?

What makes me really 'sad' though, is that I cannot make this game run on Linux (WINE/PROTON), though, it should be able to run (again, OGRE game engine - not that uncommon).

Hello buckybit,
first of all, we apologize for this issue. The game should be playable once you install it. Period.
These issues are always unpleasant even for us but every PC configuration is different and unfortunately also every PC has different software installed.

It is also the case you have problems with. The problem you are having with sound is not missing Windows media player the application, but Windows Media player the system feature. Installing the application or even other substitutes WMP classic won't help. It has to be turned off in Windows System settings. This feature is by default turned on on all machines (that's why it is pretty rare to experience this issue) but in some cases it was either turned off by the players themselves (when installing Windows) or probably another installed software library disabled it.
Here is the guide how to enable it.
Please let me know if you were able to enable it and it helped.

This issue has nothing to do with OGRE engine, because OGRE engine provides just the "graphical" part of the game. Hence comparing sound issues with other OGRE game is not really applicable here.

Linux has never been advertised as a supported platform, moreover the game runs on MOGRE (Managed OGRE) and not Ogre. There is a case when a player successfully play the game on Mac with WINE, so you can try the same.
Please keep in mind that it is not officially supported.

Thanks for your reply.

I managed to get the game running on Win8.1 ... with sound. The game did crash past the Slitherine Launcher after installing it the first time. Repeatedly.

Apparently, I have never started the pre-installed Windows Media Player on Win8.1. After running it once and allowing WMP to handle all file extensions, re-installing the game again and launching ... voila - everything works! No crash on start.

Windows 10 build issue (explanation)
===============================

/*The advice you gave (and Microsoft too) is exactly what does not currently work - at least on THIS Windows 10 Pro build: May Update 18908 (20H1) Preview release. I cannot enable WMP via 'add feature' or any other way to make Win10 update/re-activate WMP. as a default player/device.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17615/windows-media-player-12

The ONLY thing Windows 10 allows me to use is to enable the Windows media codec package in the Media Player category. But the codec without being registered (regedit Classes) does nothing. Trying to manually install the Player and re-enable the functionality by downloading the msu package (KB update file) will not work.

The Windows Insider Preview "Feedback Hub" has a response from the Microsoft Windows 10 Team (only visible for Insider/Feedback users) explaining they had a bug with their FOD (Features on Demand) SCCM/WSUS (Windows Update Services), which prevent it from working in Windows Update Clients.

All Windows 10 Home N (no Media Player) builds are affected, as are the kind of Windows 10 Pro builds, I am currently on. You might want to look into it, only if it starts affecting a larger userbase.

Thanks.*/
I am really happy to hear that you got it running.

As far as I understand the only "missing" part was to open WMP once?

Thank you for the explanation regarding the Windows builds not having this feature at all. I humbly confess that I haven't heard about this limitation. I hope this will be addressed by MS in one of the future updates.
I hope you will enjoy the game now and thank you for the patience.
