Hey everyone.

I did some digging in the support page, and allot of people seem to have this problem. So, Age of Wonders 2 seems to have stuttering animations and i just cant seem to fix them. I tried everything: Windowed mode, Direct3d on/off, gamebar on/off, and allot of other different things. But i just can't seem to fix this. Weird thing is, i suddenly noticed the stuttering. As far as I know it hasnt been there before.

So, i'm open to any and all advice at the moment. I am a die hard Age of Wonders fan, and it just breaks my heart that i cant play this game smoothly.

I have a gaming pc, with a i7 8700 and a NVIDIA GTX 1070 TI with windows 10.

Hope yall have some good advice!

I have no such issues with aow2 on Windows 10, but I can't remember what I did to fix it - I think it was very slow for me in the past. Maybe something about drivers? Also play windowed mode, since you can stretch the window to fullscreen anyway and it lets you alt-tab. Don't know if that'll fix the stuttering.
Starting the game without Direct3d and cursor set to "color" and then switching D3d on in game using CTRL + R fixed it for me. Without D3d it was even worse than before, but switching it back on with the keyboard shortcut fixes it, strangely.

I also had to install dgVoodoo to play in widescreen, so maybe this would help, too. (got the link from pcgamingwiki)

I'm talking about Shadow Magic, but I think this applies to AoW2 as well. Good Luck!

Thank you all for the help. The issue is now fixed, yet I have NO IDEA what I did to fix it. I altered some of the settings like mentioned above and at first it didnt work. but after me not playing the game for two days, the issue is fixed!!

No idea what happened, im completely in the dark. I'm just praying it stays 'fixed'
If you have this problem, before messing with anything just try to restart your computer after installing the game.

Posting on this old thread, but this is relatively high up on Google so I figure it's worth mentioning, it might also explain the above behavior "after me not playing the game for two days, the issue is fixed". Restarting is mentioned in some Steam discussions and other forums alongside other tips like setting cursor to Color in aow2Setup.exe, Ctrl+R to switch between render modes (this might only work in Shadow Magic?), Ctrl+F to toggle texture filtering, trying all different Windows compatibility modes etc. Nothing worked for me, but after a reboot animations run at normal speed without stuttering.

Haven't really found an actual root cause for this, but this seems to work now. Hopefully it stays fixed.
