I've installed the freebie original, and I've actually wanted to try the series for a while (it was even one of my requested games on my Secret Santa wishlist), so I'm pretty eager to try this, but unfortunately, whenever I start up the game, the intro video appears as a black screen for me. I can hear audio just fine, but it doesn't seem to display any video. Also, the title screen appears just fine thereafter.

Well if it works after and it's only issue then you can just watch it on youtube. :-)
I think I read about it somewhere but unfortunately can't recall it much.
Try to change settings in AoWSetup.exe (or through start menu). Try different resolutions or run the game windowed, that's my best guess right now.
The file to use is Config. It's in your start menu within the Age of Wonders folder. You can deactivate the intro movie, select your language, and some other options which should improve the game's performance.

The file is called AoWSetup.exe. It's only called Config in start menu. ;-)

Good catch! I'm really hoping we can turn some of these folks into PBEM players so you'll have new folks to lose to. :)
Everything else is working, and I can skip the video fine, but it's just not displaying on my machine. "Watch it on YouTube" isn't much of a solution, I've already done that, but I really shouldn't have to.
I once heard the solution of playing it windowed mode instead of full screen.. maybe try that and see if it works.

My guess is, the old Intel Indeo 3.2 video codec (IV32) isn't properly working on your machine. AoW is using it for the intro video.

Maybe you've got a codec pack installed that interferes or it's just not installed or simply not registered.
On Windows 7 try registering the new version 5 at first. It should be included.

Use Windows' search and look for "cmd".
Right-click cmd.exe and select "Run as administrator"

On 32 bit systems type in the following:
cd C:\Windows\System32\

On 64 bit Windows
cd C:\Windows\SysWOW64\

Then
regsvr32 ir50_32.dll

The original old version 3.2 is named ir32_32.dll, but try the newer one first.
regsvr32 ir32_32.dll

Windows dropped the Indeo codes because of security issues.
Nothing really concerning, but you might want to unregister them again, if you don't need them anymore later.
Do this with the following commands (don't forget to start cmd.exe as admin):
regsvr32 /u ir50_32.dll
regsvr32 /u ir32_32.dll

regsvr32 /u ir_32_32.dll
Would installing the older DirectX versions solve this?

No, DirectX doesn't contain any video codecs.
Windowed mode seems to make no difference.

ir50_32.dll doesn't seem to do anything, while ir_32_32.dll gives an error message "LoadLibrary("ir_32_32.dll") failed - The specified module could not be found.".

Also, I should mention I'm running Windows XP SP3. While I'm at it, here's what Speccy has to say about my hardware:

Sorry, type-o on my side. The file is named ir32_32.dll

regsvr32 ir32_32.dll

That you're running XP (32 bit) is actually good news, because it should generally work on your system.

I actually tried that one too, and it gave the same error.

The rest of the game seems to be working, and I saw the video on YouTube... Still inconvenient, but I think I'm just going to give up for now. Thank you for trying to help me.

As it's only the intro that is affected by this codec issue, it's indeed a minor glitch. Watching it elsewhere is good enough in my opinion too.

If you get the same error message, the codec is missing on your system. You'll have to install it (Intel Indeo 3.2) or add it manually:

Copy the proper ir32_32.dll to C:\Windows\system32
Open regedit and add the following REG_SZ values to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32

vidc.iv31=ir32_32.dll
vidc.iv32=ir32_32.dll

For those people who play the game on a Mac

I've installed the game in WINE, had the same problem. I knew I did not have the Indeo codec installed.
So I searched on the internet the legacy Indeo codec (which is part of Indeo 5). Ran iv5setup.exe, choose for custom install Indeo Video 3.2 Codec (and nothing else from the options)

After the installation of the coded the intro movie plays just fine (as does the rest of the game)
