Install this, it's an updated version of one of the game files. Just need to point the extraction at your game installation.

Southern's method is the smoothest for windows installs, but if for whatever reason you have a linux/gnu setup that relies on wine bottles (or just are sceptical of the linked software), you can press and hold <enter>. There will likely be hundreds of identical error reports depending on the map size, number of hexes visible, and the number of hexes that contain the render error. This error check is done hex by hex and generates a popup each time. Eventually all of these error reports will resolve when you hold down <enter> and each report is cycled through. This may take up to 20 seconds for large maps but it will eventually run through all of the error messages (sometimes with strange graphical effects). When you're playing a simultaneous game and this occurs, if you're fast enough (take action between error popups), you can shift the visible level from surface to underground (<Pg_Up> or <Pg Dn> are the default shortkeys in AoW1 TS1.36) to allow the actions to happen without having to visually render and encounter the error instances. If I recall correctly, the patch that Southern linked basically just presses "OK" for you.

tldr: hold <enter> and try pressing <page down> at the same time.
