Hey,

So basically when i install the game through GOG and after i launch it - it crashes to desktop.
Im using Windows 10, whhich it clearly states that it supports, but my experience is otherwise.

I tried all the workarounds I found that included as follows:

- launching game from root folder, clicking main.exe
- running both the desktop shortcut and main.exe as administrator
- messing with libpandadx9.dll file
- re-installing game several times
- trying to use the dgVoodoo workaround
- installing game to C:/ directory
- official patch
- installing DirectX 9 + codec packs incase that was the issue
- testing compatability option in every possible way

All of the above did NOT fix the issue.
I still cannot play the game.

If anyone has found a way that makes the game work, please write it down below.
I really love this game and i played it in 2008....i just want to play it again because it was fun...
Thank you for your time~
Cheers~

Game launches for me on Win10 which of course won't help you but at least it is not the case that it is not possoible at all to launch it. You said you tried launching main.exe directly from the root folder but the main.exe is in the subfolder "game" of the installation directory ... but you probably meant that you started it directly from within this subfolder, right?. Do you even see the loading screen?

There is one thing you really should try: Set your graphic cards settings back to default. The game crashes the moment you try to force special settings like Anti Alias through the driver.

Exact same issue, tried workarounds but doesn't seem to change. It loads the first screen and then crashes.

No, I launched the main.exe from the /game folder. The opened folder through other means has only GOG launcher in it and that doesn't work.

Im happy it works for you. I got same reply from support.
Doesnt get past loading in screen for me though, so crashes as soon as the blood loading bar comes to the top aka finishes loading. So game tries to load upon launch, but ultimately crashes once its reached the 100% of the red bar(first screen before anything happens/appears).
Support gave me a hint for disabling multiple sound devices, but that didnt work either. Still crashes the same way.

So yeah, im stuck with loading screen that never gets past that point and crashes in seconds after launch.

This is very annoying, specially since it states "Runs on Win 10", doesnt say if with or without issues.

As I thought. You did use the main.exe inside of the suibfolder "game" and not inside the "root" directory (which is what you said before) since there is no main.exe inside the root.

Support has no clue when it comes to technical difficuilties with games. Every technical issue I had with a game I had to solve by myeelf since support alwys gave the usual 101 support (reinstalling DX, disabling firewall and antivirus, reinstalling game ect).

It's a bit confusing thought hat it is so annoying to you yet it took you 192 days until you replied here ...
Technically it DOES run on Wn10 that has been proven ... why it does not run for you is a thing we try to figure out . Win10 however in itself is not the problem since it does run for me and others.It is amazing that it did not even work for ou using dgVoodoo - so it probably also is not a GPU problem... you mentioned codec packs that you tested. Diod you uninstall all those before testing again? In some cases too many codecs is as bad as not enough of them.

You probably found this already?

It says Win7 but might be worth to try as well.

I have breast cancer, so my heath isn't stable most of teh time (thanks to which PC time is also limited, quite) and when i buy a game - I want to play it.

Is that so hard to understand?
Besides its NOT like any of these replies actually 'helped' me to run the game. So also forgive a person for not checking 'dead' forums with no solutions.

I dont need to be told "technically it runs on Win 10". That is no help to me. If you dont have issues - Im happy for you, but I wrote my problem down here in hopes of getting a constructive solution and the result - I got none.

I purged codecs I installed after they didnt work/havent helped a first few times trying to launch the game.
It is amazing, that voddoo didnt work. I doubt Nvidia GeForce 1070ti is the problem. Otherwise it should be specified what cards may not run the game in the description of the game or are too powerful for it.

You are quite rude to someone who wants to help you. I am sorry for your condition but I never had bad intentions. Normally these things are a sort of a dialogue. People suggest things, you try them and you report back. Then people (hopefully) have another bunch of suggestions. That's basically all the community will be able to do since we did not develop the program. If however the reply takes over 100 days - such threads often will get abandoned because people thought (as I did myself) that you managed to solve the problem by yourself.

It never was supposed to be a help for you. But you are continuing to say that the problem is Win10 which clearly it is not. The problem lies elsewhere and when trying to fix a problem, knowing what it is NOT is also helpful in finding out the problem itself.

Well, often newer drivers are simply not compatible for older games like this one - and that's the reason why dgVoodoo might have helped since it uses its own driver. Did you also try dxwnd or wine3d? These are different wrappers.

In the subfolder "ect." you will find a config file of the game - editing it might help as well (maybe try to run th egame in a window or in opengl mode?).

Oh, btw: When you tried dgVodoo - did it show the dgVoodoo watermak on the button left side of the loading screen?

Okay, first off thank you for taking time to think with me, i do appreciate that!
I spent 6 days trying every solution I could find back when I bought it and then got tired and well yeah till now. I thought id give it another go at trying to fix it and have it run for once atleast.

That is an obvious conclusion, however if the games store page tells me it runs on Win 10 - then I expect that 1070ti will not be an issue...I dont know any gamers with cards below mine atm and all play on Win10 (not this game specifically, but you understand what I mean).
Also to add to that - when I got my 'GOG support' answer and they looked at my dxdiag sheet, they never mentioned my card as a source of the issue. All drivers are up to date. Everything else works fine. Ofc I imagine if I wante dto play "The Longest Journey" or something - then I would have those problems too.
But I also play "Beyond Good and Evil" on this machine without any fuss or problems and if i remember correctly it came out way before Vampyre story has (2003, looked it up).
Im aware "Need for Speed Underground" wont run on multiple cores, so you have to force the game to run on one only. But all the solutions for this were findable. I just keep coming across same solutions for Vampyre story, that thankfully worked for some, but they dont here for me....
But also,if the case is - your card is too powerful, then wouldnt it be fair to a customer to mention this???
Why didnt support say something then, when they went through my whole setup?

Im only finding some wine related stuff right now. Havent seen any dxwnd solutions either, yet.
So no, that I am doing right now, but if you have proper instruction, for me to skip 5 hour research, please share.
Im not super familiar with wrappers, since I didnt need them previously for anything, only this game makes me run in circles.
The only solution I refuse to try - is making a virtual machine. Its a principle. If you tell it runs on Win10 then i want to run on Win10....making a virtual machine just to play a game that is supposed to run without one on Win10 anyway is...dissapointing to say the least. Not to mention this solution wasnt suggested by the support either.

I remember i tried adjusting config file too before, but it didnt do it. I will try again. Maybe for some reason it might work now.

When I tried VooDoo solution and many diff setups with it, since the game only was launching and trying to load - i havent seen the watermark. Mine says i should look for it at bottom right corner, so I have. I may have seen something, but the 3 seconds that it takes it to crash - im pretty sure i didnt notice a watermark anywhere.
Does it appear as soon as game runs or has to appear right away even when game is loading? Cause if its the first one - then I never get to actually even seeing the menu.

Lypheja: Okay, first off thank you for taking time to think with me, i do appreciate that!
You're welcome. Just to make it clear - I can't guarantee that any of my suggestions I have or might have in the future will actually help you but I try to provide every possible solution I could think of.

Regarding GOG support. When it comes to technical difficulties they never were able to help me since they mostly suggest the same things that I knew about before even contacting them. Thinking "out of the box" is not their kind of thing. They are providing obvious solutions like reinstalling game, antivirus, firewall, rights ect.

I don't want to say that your GPU is unable to run the game but sometimes certain combinations of drivers and hardware can be an issue (does not have to mean that your card is too powerful but drivers are changing with each new version unfortunately.... sometimes just a driver setting is the problem). Support does not really know which combinations will work and which won't ... in fact - nobody is able to know that. So all you can do is to try different things. Support will always tell you to use the latest drivers (which are drivers that weren't even available when the game was developed ;)).

Sure.

Lypheja: Im not super familiar with wrappers, since I didnt need them previously for anything, only this game makes me run in circles.
Actually quite a few older games do have problems with newer GPU and a wrapper often is the best solution. Most common and most compatible wrapper is dgVoodoo. I had to use a wrapper for Jedi Knight, Longest Journey (better AA) and Tex Murphy: Overseer (get rid of transparent textures) at least.

You would not create a VM as a fix but as a step to find the source of the problem. Of course using a VM would not be a solution. It is just part of the trial and error process called bugfixing :)

Yes, it appears already in the loading screen and if it does not it meand that something went wrong in "installing" the wrapper. I have attached a screenshot of how it should look if dgVoodoo is actually running.

Which files of dgVoodoo did you put in which directory exactly?

Regarding possible changes to the ini file in the "ect" folder ... changing them does not seem to do anything. However there is this file

\A Vampyre Story\game\assets\scripts\14793.bin

which you can open with an editor like notepad++ and the inside looks like this:

<option name="override_game_state_load_file" value="False"/>
<option name="light_gui" value="False"/>
<option name="language" value="english"/>
<option name="script_gui" value="False"/>
<option name="high_quality_lighting" value="True"/>
<option name="dialog_text" value="True"/>
<option name="preload_actors" value="False"/>
<option name="override_game_state_load_filename" value="assets/scripts/saved_game.xml"/>
<option name="full_screen" value="True"/>
<option name="music_volume" value="10"/>
<option name="anti_alias" value="True"/>
<option name="particle_gui" value="False"/>
<option name="anti_alias_level" value="0"/>
<option name="safe_mode" value="False"/>
<option name="anti_alias_method" value="multi-sample"/>
<option name="Voice_volume" value="10"/>
<option name="resolution" value="1024"/>
<option name="foley_volume" value="10"/>
<option name="run_mode" value="normal"/>

Setting fullscreen to false, anti alias false and changing the resolution value would be my suggestions to see if it will start. Savemode setting to "True" might be an option as well.

Thank you - i will try this<3
I did manage to run it on my partners PC (older card,etc) without any issues, but yes I would prefer to use my own PC when I want to play my games.
